Biography

Lyanna Mormont was written as a one day job, a small girl in a fur cloak who tells the lords of the North exactly what she thinks of them. The scene landed so well that the writers kept bringing her back, and by the end of 'Game of Thrones' she was one of the most quoted characters in the show. The eleven year old playing her had never had a professional acting job.

Bella Ramsey was born in Nottingham in 2003 and grew up in Leicestershire. At ten they joined the Television Workshop, the Nottingham institution that has turned out Samantha Morton, Vicky McClure and Jack O'Connell, and at twelve they left mainstream school for an online one, because the classroom was not working.

Worth stating plainly: Ramsey is non binary and has used they/them since 2023. They were also diagnosed as autistic while shooting the first season of 'The Last of Us', and have described putting a name to it as freeing.

From Westeros to Cackle's Academy

After three seasons on 'Game of Thrones' between 2016 and 2019 came the first lead: Mildred Hubble in 'The Worst Witch', the CBBC adaptation of Jill Murphy's books that started in 2017. It won Ramsey the 2019 BAFTA Children's Award for best young performer.

They left the show after three series because of an eating disorder that developed during filming, something they have since talked about openly in interviews rather than tidying away.

Alongside it came the voice of the title character in Netflix's animated 'Hilda' between 2018 and 2023, and small film parts: 'Holmes & Watson' (2018), 'Judy' (2019), as Judy Garland's daughter opposite Renée Zellweger, and 'Resistance' (2020).

The first film lead was 'Catherine Called Birdy' (2022), Lena Dunham's medieval comedy about a thirteenth century teenager refusing every husband her father lines up.

Ellie, and everything that came with her

In January 2023 HBO launched 'The Last of Us', the adaptation of the Naughty Dog game made by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. Ramsey played Ellie, the teenager immune to the infection who crosses a wrecked United States with the Joel of Pedro Pascal.

The show was enormous and the nominations followed: Emmy, Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG, all of them in actress categories. Ramsey was the first openly non binary performer nominated for a lead acting Emmy, and the youngest person ever nominated in that category at the BAFTA TV Awards.

The second season, which HBO aired in April 2025, gave them far more to carry. More nominations arrived, and so did a fairly vile online campaign about their appearance and their gender. On the awards question, Ramsey has argued that the categories should stay split so that women do not lose ground, which surprised a good number of people.

The third season, filming this year for a 2027 release, hands the story to Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, and Ramsey will be in much less of it. Druckmann left the production in 2025 and Mazin carried on alone, insisting we have not seen the last of Ellie.

Berlin, Channel 4 and a waxwork

The other work never stopped. They did the second series of the BBC prison drama 'Time' in 2023 opposite Jodie Whittaker, which won them a Royal Television Society award, and voiced Molly in 'Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget' (2023).

Two films have come out this year. 'Sunny Dancer', a Scottish production directed by George Jaques that premiered at the Berlinale in February, casts Ramsey as Ivy, a seventeen year old in remission from leukaemia whose parents pack her off to a camp for teenagers with cancer. Jessica Gunning, James Norton and Neil Patrick Harris are in it too.

The other is 'The Sheep Detectives', another voice role in animation. Still to come is 'Maya', the six part series Daisy Haggard has created for Channel 4, shooting in Scotland with Ramsey in the title role.

Away from filming they have started releasing music. In October 2025 they put out a track with the musician Matt Maltese under the name Bello, having already recorded an acoustic version of 'Take on Me' for the second season soundtrack of 'The Last of Us'.

They are a patron of Bamboozle, the Leicester theatre company that works with autistic and learning disabled young people, and have worked with Greenpeace on its oceans campaign since 2019. In 2025 Madame Tussauds in London unveiled a figure of them, the first of an openly non binary person.

At 22 they have been working for a decade and have already had most of it: the biggest show on television, a witches' academy, an Emmy nomination and a pile of abuse from strangers. What comes next looks smaller and a good deal more under their own control.
