Biography

Most British audiences met Emma Suárez in 2016, when Pedro Almodóvar split the heroine of 'Julieta' in two and handed her the harder half. Adriana Ugarte played the young Julieta; Suárez played the woman left behind, waiting years for a daughter who won't speak to her. The film, adapted from three Alice Munro stories, was Spain's entry for the foreign language Oscar. It looked like a breakthrough. She had been working since 1980.

A teenager picked from a casting call

She was born in Madrid on 25 June 1964, into a family with no connection to the industry and with no plans to act. A casting call for a film version of Rosa Chacel's novel 'Memorias de Leticia Valle' changed that when she was still at school, and the film came out in 1980. Two years later she was onstage in Madrid in a play by Antonio Gala.

The eighties were slow going. Oddly, the thing that made her famous was a pop video: the singer Joaquín Sabina cast her in the clip for 'Así estoy yo sin ti'. Her first real adult lead came in 1989 with 'La blanca paloma', opposite Francisco Rabal and a pre-Hollywood Antonio Banderas.

The Julio Medem years

What turned her into the face of a generation was her run with Julio Medem. They made three films in five years, 'Cows' (1992), 'La ardilla roja' (1993) and 'Tierra' (1996), all of them opposite Carmelo Gómez. Spanish critics started calling her a muse, a label she has never much liked, since it describes what a director sees rather than what an actress does.

Lope de Vega, in verse

In 1996 she took on something most screen actors avoid: an hour and a half of Golden Age verse. 'The Dog in the Manger', directed by Pilar Miró from the Lope de Vega play, won her a first Goya for Best Actress in January 1997. 'Things I Left in Havana' followed the same year.

Then came a quieter stretch, heavier on theatre than on film. She worked through Genet, Chekhov and Pinter, and kept picking up festival prizes when the right script arrived, among them Best Actress at Valladolid's Seminci in 2010 for 'The Mosquito Net'.

Two Goyas in one night

The second surge came after she turned fifty. Alongside 'Julieta' she had shot 'The Next Skin' for Isaki Lacuesta and Isa Campo, playing the mother of a boy who vanished and turns up years later. At the February 2017 ceremony she won both acting Goyas, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Only Verónica Forqué had done it before, back in 1988.

Work arrived from outside Spain too. In Mexico she shot 'April's Daughter' for Michel Franco, as a mother whose help for her pregnant teenage daughter curdles into something much worse. It took the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2017.

Television, family and what she's doing now

Television came calling at the same time. She won a Feroz Award for 'La zona' (2017), appeared in the Spanish chapter of 'Criminal' (2019), the Netflix anthology created by the British writers George Kay and Jim Field Smith, and carried her first television series outright in 'Néboa' (2020), a Galician thriller in which she plays a Civil Guard lieutenant. More recently she was the businesswoman Laura Trueba in 'Reina Roja' (2024).

She gives away very little about her private life, and that's deliberate. She was married to the director Juan Estelrich Jr., with whom she had a son, Juan, in 1992, and they separated in 1997. She later had a daughter, Ada Marta, with the musician Andy Chango; that relationship ended in 2010. In 2020 the Spanish government awarded her the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts.

She hasn't slowed down. 'Josephine' (2021) brought another Goya nomination, and she has since made 'The Rite of Spring' (2022), the comedy 'The Tenderness' (2023) and 'Dismantling an Elephant', an architect coming home from rehab, released in Spain in January 2025. In July 2026 she turned up in 'Ancestral', a rural horror piece with an all-female cast, and that September the Festivalito de La Palma made her one of its honorees. Forty-six years after that casting call, she still goes for the awkward part over the comfortable one.
