Biography

Few actresses can claim to have reigned over so many galaxies: she has been a space courtesan, an alien messiah, an extraterrestrial queen and the girlfriend of a loudmouthed mercenary. And today, on top of all that, she is American television's favourite sheriff. Morena Silva de Vaz Setta Baccarin was born in Rio de Janeiro on 2 June 1979, daughter of the Brazilian actress Vera Setta and the journalist Fernando Baccarin. When she was ten the family moved to New York for her father's job, and there the carioca girl, who had grown up in the wings watching her mother perform, followed in her footsteps: she studied at the LaGuardia arts high school, the one from 'Fame', and graduated from the prestigious Juilliard School in 2000.

Inara, the muse of 'Firefly'

After an independent film debut in 'Perfume' (2001), her first big break came in 2002, when Joss Whedon cast her as Inara Serra, the elegant companion of 'Firefly', opposite Nathan Fillion; by her own account, she went from audition to set practically overnight. The network cancelled the show after a single season, but its cult following grew so strong that fans willed a big screen farewell into existence, 'Serenity' (2005), and her character remains carved into the memory of series lovers.

Science fiction never let her go. She was the unsettling Adria in the final season of 'Stargate SG-1', a role she reprised in the TV film 'Stargate: The Ark of Truth' (2008), and above all the icy alien queen Anna of 'V' (2009), the remake of the legendary lizard invasion, taking the baton from the iconic Diana of the eighties. Across two seasons she built a villain of surgical coldness that earned her two Saturn Award nominations. In those years she also kept working in independent film with 'Death in Love' (2008) and 'Stolen Lives' (2009).

'Homeland' and an Emmy nomination

Her leap into prestige drama came with 'Homeland', the Emmy winning series, where for three seasons (2011-2013) she played Jessica, wife of the marine turned suspect played by Damian Lewis, sharing the screen with Claire Danes. While the CIA fought its war, her character fought a quieter one at home, and the work brought her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama in 2013, though the show wrote the character out after the third season, to the disappointment of many fans.

Then came 'Gotham', the Batman prequel in which she played Dr. Leslie Thompkins, medical examiner, lover and occasional villain, a classic comics character she made entirely her own across its five seasons (2015-2019). That series changed her life twice over, because on set she met her future husband. As a nod to completists, she has also been a regular voice of the DC universe: she was Black Canary in 'Justice League Unlimited' and the artificial intelligence Gideon in 'The Flash'.

Vanessa, Deadpool's girlfriend

Mainstream audiences discovered her for good in 2016 as Vanessa, the comics' Copycat and impossible love of Ryan Reynolds' mercenary in 'Deadpool', the smash that broke records for an adults only blockbuster, with a love story that anchors all the franchise's chaos. Then came 'Deadpool 2' (2018) and her return in 'Deadpool & Wolverine' (2024).

Along the way she tried spy comedy with Melissa McCarthy in 'Spy' (2015), fled a comet alongside Gerard Butler in 'Greenland' (2020), one of the most watched thrillers of the pandemic era, and strung together thrillers such as 'Last Looks' (2021) and 'Fast Charlie' (2023), as well as producing and starring with Anthony Mackie in the creature adventure 'Elevation' (2024).

The sheriff who rules CBS

After the short flight of 'The Endgame' (2022), cancelled after a single season, in which she played an international arms dealer, she found her most popular role in years: sheriff Mickey Fox, introduced in the hit 'Fire Country', the television universe of Max Thieriot, in an episode fittingly titled 'Alert the Sheriff'. Her own show, 'Sheriff Country', in which she plays a straight talking small town officer dealing with a family as complicated as her cases, premiered in October 2025 with such success that CBS renewed it for a second season within weeks.

And the diary shows no sign of easing: 2026 brings the sequel 'Greenland 2: Migration', once again with Butler, the blockbuster 'Masters of the Universe' and the action comedy 'The Wrecking Crew'.

A wedding on her own birthday

Her personal life could carry a series of its own. Her marriage to the director Austin Chick, between 2011 and 2016, gave her a son, Julius. On the Gotham set love blossomed with her co-star Ben McKenzie, the show's Commissioner Gordon: their daughter Frances was born in 2016 and on 2 June 2017, the day of her 38th birthday, they married in Brooklyn. Their son Arthur completed the family in 2021.

Holding dual Brazilian and American citizenship, Baccarin has never turned her back on her carioca roots and proudly keeps speaking Portuguese at home. Thirty years after landing in New York with barely any English, the girl from Rio de Janeiro has become one of the most beloved and busiest faces on American television. Few careers have aged this well: every decade has handed her a new iconic character. The galaxies, the lizards and the mercenaries were only the beginning.
