Biography
January 2010. Morgan Spector was twenty-nine and under contract as an understudy at Broadway's Cort Theatre. Santino Fontana, who was playing Rodolpho in the revival of Arthur Miller's 'A View from the Bridge', took a concussion during a staged fight with Liev Schreiber. Spector went on for him on 7 January, went down well, and a week later the part was his for the rest of the run, opposite Schreiber and Scarlett Johansson. That was his Broadway debut.
He'd been born in Santa Rosa, California, on 4 October 1980, and grew up in Guerneville, a small town in Sonoma County that he sums up as "redwoods, vineyards, hippies young and old". His mother taught and later worked as an administrator in public education, and his father practised law before becoming a stay-at-home dad. Acting ran further back in the family: his paternal grandmother performed in New York's Yiddish theatre.
A local community theatre first put him on stage aged eight. Reed College in Portland came next, then the acting school at San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater, then a national tour of 'The Lion King'. He moved to New York in 2006 and waited tables in the Meatpacking District while he looked for parts.
Ten years of theatre and small screen roles
Through the whole of the following decade the stage stayed his base. A Drama Desk nomination came in 2012 for 'Russian Transport', the same year he appeared in 'Harvey' on Broadway, and in 2014 he worked with Rebecca Hall on 'Machinal', which is where the two met. Broadway had him back in 2017 for 'Fallen Angels'.
Television handed him single episodes and short arcs in the meantime. He was Peter Yogorov in 'Person of Interest', Al Capone's brother Frank in 'Boardwalk Empire' (2013) and did an episode of 'Orange Is the New Black'. A first lead came with 'The Mist' (2017), the Stephen King adaptation Spike dropped after a single season.
Films started him off as a Fire Nation soldier in M. Night Shyamalan's 'The Last Airbender' (2010). After that came Andre in 'The Drop' (2014), James Gandolfini's last film, with Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace; Dr Parsons in Antonio Campos's 'Christine' (2016); a part in Shyamalan's 'Split' (2017); and Reece in 'Permission' (2017). Christine and that last one he made with Rebecca Hall.
The oddest job of the lot is 'Chuck' (2016), the film about the boxer Chuck Wepner whose fight with Ali gave Stallone the idea for 'Rocky'. Playing Sylvester Stallone fell to Spector, with Liev Schreiber as Wepner, Elisabeth Moss and Naomi Watts.
Homeland, Pearson and an alternative America
Television began treating him differently in 2018. The seventh season of 'Homeland' took him on as Dante Allen, and 'Suits' cast him as Mayor Bobby Novak, a character carried over into the spin-off 'Pearson' (2019).
Then came the real step up, 'The Plot Against America' (2020), the miniseries David Simon adapted for HBO from the Philip Roth novel. In it he played Herman Levin, father of a Jewish family in Newark watching Charles Lindbergh win the 1940 election and start coming to terms with Hitler. It brought a Critics' Choice nomination for Best Actor in a Limited Series, in a cast that included Zoe Kazan, Winona Ryder and John Turturro.
Matt Ruskin's 'Boston Strangler' (2023) followed, with Spector as the husband of the reporter played by Keira Knightley. Then in 2025 he was Campbell, the man who cleans up a famous artist's public image, in 'Black Rabbit', the Netflix miniseries with Jude Law and Jason Bateman.
George Russell, the robber baron who votes left
Since 2022 his face has been George Russell's in 'The Gilded Age', Julian Fellowes's series about New York in the 1880s. Russell is a railroad magnate of the strike-breaking, palm-greasing sort, married to Carrie Coon's Bertha and at war with the old money embodied by Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon. That cast took a SAG nomination in 2023.
There's a certain comedy in the casting, because Spector is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and helped produce 'The Big Scary "S" Word', a documentary on the history of socialism in the United States. He's been asked about the contradiction in plenty of interviews since.
The fourth season starts on 1 November 2026 on HBO, eight episodes running weekly to a finale on 20 December.
Robert Langdon and a two-actor household
His next part is the biggest he's had. Netflix has cast him as Robert Langdon in its series based on 'The Secret of Secrets', the Dan Brown novel published in 2025. Carlton Cuse is showrunner and co-created the adaptation with Brown, running it to eight episodes on the grounds that these books won't fit a two-hour film. Shooting began in Prague in September 2026, which is where much of the book takes place.
Rebecca Hall plays Katherine Solomon, the first serious love interest the character has had, and the cast also takes in Cherry Jones, Corey Stoll, Rob Delaney and Abbey Lee. Stoll, as it happens, was Marco in that 2010 production of 'A View from the Bridge'.
Spector and Hall married in September 2015, a little over a year after they met in the theatre, and had a daughter in 2018 whom they keep entirely out of view. Before Langdon he took 'Caity' (2026), Lindsay Calleran's first feature, to the Tribeca Festival, and he has 'Moonfish' still to come, on which he's also an executive producer.
