Plot

The movie tells the story of Artemis Fowl, a twelve year old kid from Ireland who is a supernatural criminal mastermind. The boy lives in a world which has kept some secrets for years. One of them is the existence of fairies, a world which they were forced to keep in secret and under ground due to the greed and the uncontrollable appetite that humans have. Fowls has to kidnap a fairy called Holly Short to ask for a rescue that allows him to save his father and restore the fortune of his family. Once he gets what he wants, Artemis will start an adventure which could make him fight against a maleficent fairy called Opal Koboi.

It is an adaptation of the first two novels of ?Artemis Fowl?, the science-fiction and fantasy literary series written by Eoin Colfer. The saga was famously claimed by the young readers. Disney is in charge of adapting the books to the big screen thanks to the prolific actor and director Kenneth Branagh (?Cinderella?, ?All Is True?) as a director of the film. It is starred by Ferdia Shaw, Judi Dench (?Murder on the Orient Express?, ?Victoria & Abdul?), Josh Gad (?Marshall?, ?The Beauty and the Beast?), Nikesh Patel (?Four Weddings and a Funeral?, ?Indian Summers?) and Hong Chau ('Homecoming', 'Watchmen'), among others.

Trivia

Kenneth Branagh

This is Sir Kenneth Branagh's 2nd Disney movie after Cinderella (2015). He also directed Thor (2011) which is technically distributed by Paramount Pictures but is part of Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

#Metoo pressure

Disney removed Harvey Weinstein as producer on this movie.

Commander Root

The character of Commander Root, the fairy head of the LEPrecon, is described as a broad-chested, cigar-chewing male in Eoin Colfer's books. In the movie adaptation, however, the character has been changed to female, with Dame Judi Dench being cast in the role. This is similar to her casting in the James Bond films as M, the Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service and Bond's superior, despite the character being male in Ian Fleming's books.
