Plot

In Imperial Spain during the 17th century, Diego Alatriste, a brave soldier in the service of his majesty, fights in fierce war in the cold lands of Flanders. After an ambush from some Dutch soldiers, Balboa, friend and fellow solider, falls to his death. Alatriste listens to the last words of his friend and says he will promise to fulfill his wishes: care for his son Iñgio and for him to leave the army. On his return to Madrid, Alatriste finds a dying empire. The same Spain in which Quevedo and Góngore wrote their poems, Velázquez painted his pictures, and Lope de Vega released his comedies, it has collapsed before the impassiveness of the king.

The court of Felipe IV, dominated by corruption, is handled to Conde Duque de Olivares, with the support of the Holy Inquisition. Alatriste, will be involved when he is s hired next to another mercenary, the Italian Walter Malatesta, for killing two mysterious figures who travel incognito in Madrid. The fate of Alatriste is marked when, sensing something murky in the incident request, decides to forgive the life of the two foreigners and face Malatesta instead who intended to finish the job.
