Synopsis

By 2007 the big American networks had all but given up on TV movies, but CBS was sticking with one: the hard-drinking cop from Robert B. Parker's novels whom Tom Selleck had been playing since 2005. 'Jesse Stone: Sea Change' is the fourth Jesse Stone film, directed once again by Robert Harmon from the novel 'Sea Change', and the network premiered it on 22 May 2007.

Nothing happens in Paradise, Massachusetts. Jesse is bored stiff writing parking tickets, his ex-wife tells him she's seeing someone and he's drinking more than he should again. His psychiatrist, Dr. Dix (William Devane), tells him to find something that matters to keep his mind busy, so Jesse decides to reopen an unsolved case: a 1992 bank robbery in which a teller was killed. New officer Rose Gammon (Kathy Baker) gives him a hand while Suitcase is still in hospital.

On top of that, an 18-year-old girl turns up at the station with her father to report that she was raped on the yacht of a rich man passing through town. And Jesse starts to get the feeling that someone is following him.

Rebecca Pidgeon, Sean Young, Mika Boorem, Stephen McHattie, William Sadler, Saul Rubinek and Kohl Sudduth round out the cast, with a brief appearance from Viola Davis. Selleck is also an executive producer, Jeff Beal wrote the music and it was shot in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

It earned Selleck an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie, and cinematographer Rene Ohashi was nominated by the American Society of Cinematographers. It averages 75.4 out of 100 across eight reviews on the site, and most agree the mystery matters less than watching Selleck.

What the critics say average 7.5 from 8 outlets

  • 9.5 Uncle BarkyEd Bark The real reason to watch, though, is Selleck. He's simply letter-perfect, whether drinking too much or learning too little. Read
  • 8.3 Christian Science MonitorGloria Goodale Some critics have faulted the series for its lack of action, but these character/crime stories are shaggy-dog tales at heart, and good guilty-pleasure viewing just the way they are. Read
  • 8.0 It's a Stampede!Alex Wiggan All-in-all there's a good balance of story and characterisation, and even though the series is now four films in, there's the general feeling the movies have barely scratched the surface. Read
