Mrs. Fang

Winner of the Golden Leopard at the 70th Locarno International Film Festival, the prestigious Chinese documentary filmmaker Wang Bing films the last days of life of Fang Xiuyan, a farmer from Huzhou, in Fujian province. Born in the late 1940s, the woman had long been suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. The filmmaker met her story through Fang Xiuyan's daughter in 2014 and met the farmer a year later. Due to her deteriorated state of health, the director was deeply moved by the life of that lady. Without separating from her, Wang saw how the health of the woman was getting worse, being the year 2016 the last one that would live. Knowing the fate of the old woman, Wang decided to turn the last moments of the life of the farmer into documentary poetry, turning the woman in the voice of those people who live in the margins of the society and whose histories are forgotten throughout the history. Thanks to the documentary, Fang Xiuyan will be remembered, as well as the relatives who took care of her until her last breath.
