Synopsis

Eight years after 'Walk the Line' won Reese Witherspoon an Oscar for playing June Carter Cash, Lifetime went back to the singer's story, this time telling it from her side rather than Johnny Cash's. 'Ring of Fire' is based on 'Anchored in Love', the 2007 book about her written by the couple's son, John Carter Cash, and it's directed by Allison Anders.

It starts in the mountains of Virginia, where young June sings with her sisters in the Carter Family, the group led by her uncle A. P. Carter and her mother Maybelle. She doesn't have their voice, so she wins audiences over with comedy routines, and as an adult she goes solo and marries the singer Carl Smith.

Things change when she's hired to tour with Johnny Cash. The chemistry between them is obvious from the start, even though both are still married to other people, and the relationship that grows out of those tours has one constant enemy: his addiction to pills, which will test June's patience and faith again and again.

Jewel, who does her own singing, plays June, and Matt Ross, seen in 'American Horror Story', takes on Johnny Cash. Frances Conroy is Maybelle Carter, and John Doe, a founding member of the punk band X, plays A. P. Carter. Richard Friedenberg wrote the script and Anton Sanko composed the score.

Lifetime premiered it on 27 May 2013, and it went on to earn four Emmy nominations, among them one for Anders's direction. Critics were far less kind and mostly singled out Jewel's voice: the 10 outlets collected on Movienco give it an average of 5.0 out of 10.
