Plot

'That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea' takes Rimuru Tempest and his entourage of a thousand times outstanding creatures to a place as unexpected in the isekai universe as it is necessary after so many epic battles: a vacation island. Directed by Yasuhito Kikuchi and produced by studio 8bit, the film is set right after the inaugural ceremony of the Jura Tempest Federation, when the celestial empress Elmesia, leader of the Magi dynasty of Thalion, invites the group to her private resort so they can get some rest. What seems like the typical beach episode stretched to 104 minutes quickly transforms into something else when Yura appears, a mysterious woman who drags with her a secret linked to the celestial sea and the fate of an ancient clan.

From there, the film makes one of the most interesting moves the franchise has made to date: it hands the spotlight over to Gobta. Yes, that little goblin who has traditionally served as comic relief and as a punching bag for half of Tempest. And the decision works, because for the first time in a long while the story gains in vulnerability what it loses in omnipotence.

Rimuru is still there, of course, but the relationship between Gobta and Yura is the true heart of the film, an honest and melancholic romance that sidesteps the usual tropes of the genre to end up telling something rather less predictable. Along the way, there's room for very accomplished action choreography, chases through Venetian-style streets and a CGI Water Dragon that integrates better than is usually the case in this kind of production.

The film arrived in Spanish cinemas on April 30, 2026, just two months after its release in Japan, distributed by Sony Pictures in collaboration with Crunchyroll. It is the second film in the franchise and, although it is an original story signed by Fuse himself, it does not belong to the strict canon of the anime, which makes it a comfortable entry point for new viewers and, at the same time, a bridge to the fourth season that kicked off this past April.
