The film 'The Guardians' is based upon the novel written by Ernest Perochon, and tells the story of those women left behind to move their country forward while the men went to fight in the war. In the France of 1915, in the middle of the Great War, a mother and her daughter are left alone in charge of the Paridier farm while the men of the family are fighting on the front. Without knowing if their relatives will return, the mother rescues Francine, a young orphan, to help them with the housework. They work from sunrise to sunset and their monotonous life in the countryside will have a chist of emotion with the arrival of the young woman who believes she has finally found a family. The film is directed by Xavier Beauvois, awarded in Cannes for 'De dioses y hombres', and his protagonists are Nathalie Baye ('Catch me if you can'), Laura Smet ('Yves Saint Laurent') and the debutant Iris Bry. Trivia The Guardians

The Guardians is based upon the 1924 novel of the same name by Ernest Pérochon. Pérochon was a teacher and also soldier during World War II. Director explains that the farm in the movie was in a very bad state when they found it, and they had to restore it. In the words of Xavier Beauvois, the owner "thought we were going to make it «in cardboard» but designer Yann Me?gard said it's usually cheaper to restore it «for real»." Nathalie Baye and Laura Smet, who play mother and daughter Hortense and Solange, are mother and daughter in real life.
