This is Eli Roth's first adaptation of a literary work, his first Gothic work and his first family film. Eli Roth's first directed film working with Amblin Entertainment, it's founder and one of his cinematic heroes Steven Spielberg. Eli Roth previously had a cameo in El mundo perdido: Jurassic Park (1997) that was directed by Spielberg and produced by Amblin. Also Eli has said his favorite Spielberg movies are Tiburón (1975) and Poltergeist (Fenómenos extraños) (1982). Famed Goth artist Edward Gorey did the illustrations for the book that this movie is based on.
