Plot
'The Tasters' is an Italian drama film co-written and directed by Silvio Soldini. Belgium and Switzerland also participate in the production of the film, shot in German. It is an adaptation of Rosella Postorino's acclaimed novel "At the Wolf's Table," and debuts first in Italian cinemas on March 27, 2025.
Based on true events, the film follows a group of women forced to work during Nazism as Hitler's food tasters. The dictator had an obsession that they wanted to poison him, so he hires this group whose job is to taste every dish before it is given to the dictator, to verify that they survive and it wasn't poisoned.
The film focuses mainly on the character of Rosa, a 26-year-old woman who escapes from a bombed Berlin to live with her husband's parents in a small Prussian village while he is on the front. There she is arrested by the SS where they force her to perform this cruel job: on one hand they have access to luxurious delicacies that are scarce for the rest of society, however every bite they take could be their last.
As the personal relationships between this heterogeneous group of women develop, suspicions, jealousies, and betrayals begin to emerge. In parallel, Rosa begins to feel attracted to an SS officer, which represents an enormous ethical and emotional conflict for her.
'The Tasters' stars Elisa Schlott, Max Riemelt, Alma Hasun, and Emma Falck, among others. The film generally receives very positive reviews.
