This year's Oscars luncheon took place on 5th February. The luncheon is an important date in the calendar of most nominees because it provides them with an opportunity to express any of their worries and observations about this year's nominated films. The 90th edition of the Oscars will take place on 4th March 2018.

This year's luncheon was a happy affair and featured all of the nominees from Guillermo del Toro's 'The Shape of Water', a film with 13 nominations, just one shy of 'Titanic', the most nominated film in the history of the Oscars. Talents such as Christopher Nolan, Greta Gerwig and Steven Spielberg were also present. Although del Toro's latest win at the Directors Guild of America awards (DGAs) puts him as the favourite to win at the Oscars.

Whilst many of the nominees saw the luncheon as a chance to meet new and re-encounter old faces, none of them could top Meryl Streep and Allison Janney. The two actresses, nominated for 'The Post' and 'I, Tonya' respectively, re-encountered one another after having filmed 'The Hours' together some many years ago. Despite being a prestigious event, some nominees were a no-show.

We thought we were seeing things

Amongst the no-shows were Daniel Day-Lewis, Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand and Christopher Plummer. However, the most notable absence was that of the honorary Oscar award winner Agnes Varda. In order to make up for her absence however, Varda sent in cardboard cutouts of herself.

The nominees all gathered around to have a photo together and one of the cutouts managed to make it into the image. You can see the photo being taken taken below in a video presented by Laura Dern.

The 90th edition of the Oscars will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
