Biography

Born in Boston on 19 November 1959 and raised in Ohio, between Cincinnati and Dayton, Allison Janney once dreamed of becoming a figure skater. Her height (she stands 6 feet tall) and a serious accident as a teenager put an end to that ambition and nudged her towards acting. She studied theatre at Kenyon College, where a chance meeting with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward proved decisive: the couple encouraged her to pursue the craft and mentored her early on. She later trained at London's prestigious RADA.

A character actress of the finest kind

Through the 1990s, Janney quietly built a reputation as a superb supporting player, the sort of actress who improves any film no matter how small the part. She turned up in titles such as 'The Ice Storm' (1997), 'Primary Colors' (1998), the teen comedy '10 Things I Hate About You' (1999) and the acclaimed 'American Beauty' (1999), in which she played the listless neighbour Barbara Fitts.

C.J. Cregg, the role that changed everything

Her big break came in 1999 as C.J. Cregg, the quick and formidable White House press secretary in 'The West Wing', the acclaimed series created by Aaron Sorkin. Across seven seasons Janney made C.J. one of the best loved characters in political drama, a performance that brought her no fewer than four Emmy Awards.

From indie films to blockbusters

Television fame never pulled her away from the big screen. Janney became a constant presence in American cinema, equally at home in drama and comedy.

She voiced the starfish Peach in 'Finding Nemo' (2003) and its sequel 'Finding Dory' (2015), played the quirky mother in 'Juno' (2007), featured in 'Hairspray' (2007) and shone in dramas like 'The Hours' (2002) and 'The Help' (2011). She also drew big laughs in 'The Way, Way Back' (2013) and 'Spy' (2015), and lent her voice to 'Minions' (2015).

An Oscar for 'I, Tonya'

The Academy's ultimate recognition arrived in 2018. Her ferocious turn as LaVona Golden, the merciless mother of skater Tonya Harding, in 'I, Tonya' (2017), alongside Margot Robbie, earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, along with the Golden Globe, the BAFTA and the Screen Actors Guild award.

Far from slowing down, she kept delivering memorable roles in films such as 'Bombshell' (2019) and 'Bad Education' (2019), and more recently in the action thriller 'Lou' (2022), the science fiction of 'The Creator' (2023) and the comedy 'The Roses' (2025).

In her private life, Janney has never married nor had children, something she says she is entirely at peace with. "I've never had that instinct to have kids," she has admitted. Engaged more than once, she always got cold feet before the altar.
