The Oscar nominations for 2019 were announced at midday yesterday and the world has not stopped talking about them since. But while the rest of us were all curious to see the results of Judgement Day and find out which of our favourite films had been nominated, nothing compares to the excitement of the lucky stars themselves who received such a recognition for their work. Here we have some of the reactions that celebrities had to receiving their Oscar nominations.

Oscars

'Black Panther' is one of the most talked about films on the list of nominations; not only is it the first superhero film to be nominated for best film, but with a total of seven nominations, it has already made history. Lupita Nyong'o shared her excitement upon hearing the news via Twitter:

'Roma' was also one of the great stars of the hour. Alfonso Cuarón's film received a total of ten nominations, including Best Picture, and it is being hailed by critics who believe that it could win and make history as the first non-English speaking film to win this Oscar. Among the many other nominations, was Yalitza Aparicio for Best Actress. The 24-year-old made her debut performance in 'Roma' and shared her joy on Twitter:

"Extremely happy, when I woke up so early today, (of course, at the time it is here) I was not expecting this news, thank you Ale A. Garcia and Mariel Mayorga for waking me up".

Another favourite in the list of nominations was, of course, 'The Favourite' which also received ten nominations. One of the co-writers, Deborah Davis, told Entertainment Weekly about her shock at being nominated for her first ever screenplay, saying: "When I wake up tomorrow my first thought will be that I must have been dreaming!"

'A Star is Born' was also showered with nominations, and 'Shallow', one of the most widely praised songs from the film's soundtrack, was nominated as best original song. Mark Ronson, one of the songwriters who collaborated on the creation, declared that what made his nomination so special for him was "to be nominated as part of this incredible film where the music is so powerful and emotional".

'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' was nominated as Best Animated Feature and Chris Miller, the writer and producer, made an addition to the Spider-Man universe, sharing an image of a golden Oscar statue wearing its own spider-suit:

While Barry Jenkins (director of 'Moonlight', the winner of Best Picture in 2018) is probably still recovering from the drama of last year's Oscar ceremony with the 'La La Land' mix-up, his work has received recognition once again. 'If Beale Street Could Talk' was nominated for Best Adapted Script, Best Soundtrack, and Best Supporting Actress with Regina King. Jenkins celebrated the news, sharing his delight on Twitter:

Jenkins also took the time to congratulate Spike Lee, who was nominated for his direction of 'BlackkKlansman':

We Are the Champions

'Bohemian Rhapsody' was nominated a total of five times, including Best Picture and Rami Malek for Best Actor in his role as Freddie Mercury, and the star was left almost speechless. He told Entertainment Weekly: "It's just something you never expect to happen. It's like a distant dream that actors have and hope for to some degree."

He was already commended with a Golden Globe only a few weeks ago, yet he confessed that, despite being no stranger to awards, "there's something about hearing the words that you're an Oscar nominated actor that are still going to be incredibly shocking. It's a profoundly humbling moment for me."
