About the Jaws saga

Steven Spielberg was 28 when he released 'Jaws' (1975), his adaptation of Peter Benchley's novel about a great white shark terrorising the beach of a resort town. The mechanical shark broke down so often during filming that Spielberg showed it as little as possible, and the suspense that followed made it the first summer blockbuster.

Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss led the hunt for the shark, and the film won three Oscars, including best score for John Williams, whose two menacing notes are among the most famous in cinema.

Without Spielberg came Jeannot Szwarc's 'Jaws 2' (1978), with Scheider back as Chief Brody, and 'Jaws 3-D' (1983), shot in 3D and set at a marine park, with Dennis Quaid. The series ended with 'Jaws: The Revenge' (1987), and the original turned fifty in 2025.
