About the Madagascar saga
DreamWorks Animation's 'Madagascar' (2005) follows four animals escaping Central Park Zoo, Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippo, who end up on the African island of the title. It was directed by Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath, with the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith, plus a lemur king, Julien, voiced by Sacha Baron Cohen.
'Madagascar' became a franchise: 'Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa' (2008) took the group to Africa, and 'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted' (2012) put them in a travelling circus on a chase across the continent; it is the highest-grossing of the four films.
The real scene-stealers were the penguins, Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private, who got their own TV series and film, 'Penguins of Madagascar' (2014). In all, four cinema releases under the DreamWorks banner.
