Biography

She grew up in rural Massachusetts, in a house lit by kerosene lamps, and it took more than two decades for the recognition she deserved to arrive. Julianne Nicholson, born in Medford, Massachusetts, on 1 July 1971, is one of those performers the industry calls "an actor's actor": an unmistakable, freckled face capable of holding any scene without ever overplaying it.

Two decades of first class supporting work

After her parents separated she spent her childhood in tiny Wendell, in almost pioneer conditions, and at 18 she moved to New York, where she studied French and anthropology at Hunter College while paying the bills as a waitress. Cinema arrived almost by accident, but with a fairy godmother attached: she made her debut opposite Meryl Streep in 'One True Thing' (1998).

Television gave her the first steady roles: she was Jenny Shaw in the final stretch of 'Ally McBeal', Detective Megan Wheeler across three seasons of 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent', the relentless prosecutor Esther Randolph in 'Boardwalk Empire' and Dr. Lillian DePaul in 'Masters of Sex'.

On film she strung together supporting parts in notable titles: 'Kinsey' (2004), 'August: Osage County' (2013), again with Streep and with Julia Roberts, 'Black Mass' (2015), the skating coach of 'I, Tonya' (2017), alongside Margot Robbie, the religious drama 'Novitiate' (2017) and the feral Colombian production 'Monos' (2019).

A marriage born of a failed pilot

Her personal life hides a delicious irony: she met the British actor Jonathan Cake while shooting an HBO pilot that never aired and was titled, of all things, 'Marriage'. That fictional marriage became a real one in 2004, when they wed in Italy, and the couple have two children.
