Biography

Some actors are named after a grandmother. Maggie Civantos was named after a soap opera. Her parents, a singer and a musician with roots in Granada who had settled in Málaga, took her name from Maggie Gioberti, a character in 'Falcon Crest'. She was born in Málaga on 28 December 1984 and grew up around rehearsals and stages, so the pull towards performing was there from the beginning. She trained at her city's School of Dramatic Art before she ever stepped in front of a camera.

Her first roles came on Spanish television, one at a time and without shortcuts. She appeared in 'Hospital Central' and 'Yo soy Bea', then found steadier ground with a part in 'The Time in Between' (2014) and the comedy 'B&b, de boca en boca'.

Macarena Ferreiro, the role that changed everything

The turning point came in 2015 with 'Locked Up', in which she played Macarena Ferreiro, an ordinary woman who ends up in prison and walks out of it a different person. The show was a phenomenon in Spain and travelled well beyond it. It also brought Civantos her first big recognition, including a shared Ondas Award with the rest of the female cast, and she went back to the character for the sequel 'Vis a vis: El oasis' (2020).

Facing her across those episodes were Najwa Nimri and Berta Vázquez, and the three of them gave the series much of its edge.

From Netflix to a career of contrasts

Even before she left the prison behind, Civantos had joined another hit. In 2017 she led 'Cable Girls', the first Spanish original series on Netflix, playing Ángeles, a switchboard operator in 1920s Madrid. That one carried her name to viewers far outside Spain.

She's kept dodging typecasting ever since. She was Blanca in the crime drama 'Malaka', Bárbara in 'Express', and took the lead in the 2024 series 'La pasión turca'. Her film work runs just as wide, from the ensemble comedy 'La pequeña Suiza' to the horror of 'La influencia', and she voiced a character in the Spanish version of 'Missing Link'.

In 2025 she shared the screen with William Levy in 'Bajo un volcán', a romance shot in Tenerife and directed by Martín Cuervo, and lined up further films such as 'Leo & Lou'. On stage, she has taken on classical parts, among them Helen in 'Las troyanas' at the Mérida festival.

Taking charge behind the camera

Acting, in time, stopped being enough. Civantos set up her own production company, Bastardas Films, and moved into directing, shooting her first feature, 'El retorno de Júpiter', in 2025 from a script she wrote herself. She'd already worked on both sides of the camera on the film 'El juego'.

Away from a set, she stays close to home. In Coín, just outside Málaga, she runs a creative space called 'La alborada', built around workshops, cultural events and retreats. Her private life is another story, one she keeps well clear of the headlines, letting the work do the talking instead.
