Biography

Óscar Casas was born in Barcelona on 21 September 1998, and by the age of nine he was already part of Spanish horror history. He grew up in a big family, the son of Ramón and Heidi, with siblings Sheila, Christian, Daniel and, twelve years his senior, Mario Casas, one of Spain's biggest stars. Óscar followed his brother into acting almost as soon as he could walk, shooting dozens of commercials before landing his first series, 'Abuela de verano', in 2005.

His early niche was an unusual one: playing his own brother as a child. He was the young Mario in the series 'SMS, sin miedo a soñar', in 'Brain Drain' (2009), one of the biggest Spanish comedy hits of its year, and in the adventure series 'El barco', turning the family resemblance into a job. Alongside those, he piled up child parts of his own in films like '53 días de invierno' (2006) and 'Proyecto dos' (2008).

The masked boy of 'The Orphanage'

His breakthrough came with 'The Orphanage' (2007), Juan Antonio Bayona's debut, produced by Guillermo del Toro. Óscar played Tomás, the boy in the sackcloth mask who stalks Belén Rueda through the old house, one of the most recognisable images in modern Spanish horror. Launched at the Cannes Critics' Week, the film topped the Spanish box office, won seven Goya awards and became the country's Oscar entry that year.

Television kept him busy for years as Gabi in 'Águila Roja', one of Spain's most watched dramas, while he took his first film lead in the football tale 'El sueño de Iván' (2011) and joined Gracia Querejeta's '15 años y un día' (2013), another Spanish Oscar submission, alongside Maribel Verdú. Then, in a rare move for a child actor, he pressed pause and went to study in Ireland for a while.

Out of his brother's shadow

He returned in 2017 fronting 'Si fueras tú', an interactive series from Spanish public broadcaster RTVE in which viewers voted on where the story went next, with María Pedraza, and spent a season on 'Cuéntame cómo pasó', the long running portrait of the Alcántara family that several generations of Spaniards grew up with. The real turning point was 'Instinto' (2019), a Movistar Plus+ psychological thriller in which he finally acted opposite Mario as an equal: his brother played a successful businessman whose sexuality hides a trauma, and Óscar was his brother in the story as well. Critics singled out the younger Casas, who earned a Feroz Award nomination for best supporting actor in a series.

The streaming years followed: he was Kobo the pirate in season two of Netflix's Colombian fantasy 'Siempre bruja' (2020), joined Blanca Suárez in 'Jaguar' (2021), about Holocaust survivors hunting Nazis hiding in sixties Spain, and appeared in the action film 'Xtremo' (2021). He then led the vampire spoof 'HollyBlood' (2022), joined the football agents comedy 'Pollos sin cabeza' (2023) and appeared the same year in the drama 'Últimas voluntades'; the family comedy 'Los Rodríguez y el Más Allá' (2019) had already shown his lighter side.

The most personal project came when Mario Casas chose him to star in his own directing debut, 'Mi soledad tiene alas' (2023), with Óscar as Dan, a working class kid who pours his anger into painting, opposite Candela González. The film later travelled the world on Netflix as 'My Loneliness Has Wings', and the brothers promoted it together across Spain.

Playing an Olympic champion

His most talked about transformation arrived with 'El gran salto' (2025), a five episode adaptation of the gymnast's autobiography, in which he underwent months of gymnastics training and a striking physical change to play Gervasio Deferr, who won vault gold at the Sydney and Athens Games and floor silver in Beijing before addiction derailed his life. The same year he headlined the romantic comedy 'Me has robado el corazón', directed by Chus Gutiérrez with Arturo Valls, Ana Milán and Luis Zahera.

On 'Ídolos' (2026), directed by Mat Whitecross, he fell for his castmate, the singer Ana Mena, during the summer 2024 shoot. The couple made things official in June 2025 with photos from a trip to Morocco and split a year later, in June 2026, by mutual agreement after almost two years together, worn down by schedules that never lined up. He had previously spent several years with actress Begoña Vargas. His next stop is Mexico, where he has shot the film 'Deseo' with Ludwika Paleta and José María Yazpik. At 27, he has two decades of work behind him: he's been the masked child of a haunted house, a Caribbean pirate, a Nazi hunter, an Olympic champion and a romcom lead, and he no longer needs to be introduced as anyone's little brother.
