Biography

Owen Teague belongs to that breed of young actors who, instead of chasing conventional leading roles, have made their name by bringing unsettling, psychologically twisted characters to life. Born in Tampa, Florida, on 8 December 1998, he grew up in a family of musicians and played the violin until he was fifteen, although his real calling had surfaced far earlier: as a small child he was already acting out film scenes with his stuffed animals, and he soon took to the stage in local theatre. Those early years on the boards produced a meticulous, chameleonic performer.

Horror as a calling card

His breakthrough came courtesy of Stephen King. In 2017 he played Patrick Hockstetter, the sadistic, disturbed bully in 'It', the hugely successful adaptation of King's novel, a role he reprised in 'It Chapter Two' (2019). Genre cinema quickly became familiar ground for him, with titles such as 'Cell' (2016), the eerie 'Mary' (2019) and 'The Empty Man' (2020).

Stephen King and a television breakthrough

Television handed him some of his meatiest parts. He had already worked on the small screen in the Netflix series 'Bloodline' while he was still at high school, and in 2019 he joined the main cast of 'Mrs. Fletcher'. It was another King adaptation, though, that truly announced him: in the miniseries 'The Stand' (2020) he played Harold Lauder, a resentful teenager seduced by evil, one of the most complex characters of his career. He also left his mark on an episode of the anthology 'Black Mirror'.

From indie films to the big leap

Wary of being typecast, Teague has balanced those dark roles with independent films that reveal his more tender register. He was the estranged son of the title character in 'To Leslie' (2022), the acclaimed drama that earned Andrea Riseborough a surprise Oscar nomination, and he has kept adding credits with 'Montana Story' (2021), 'You Hurt My Feelings' (2023) and 'The Friend' (2024).

The real turning point came in 2024, when he became the outright lead of 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes', the fourth entry in the saga, directed by Wes Ball. It was his first leading film role: he played the young chimpanzee Noa through motion capture, a challenge he prepared for by studying the behaviour of apes at a Florida sanctuary, sharing the screen with Freya Allan. Soon after, he joined the cast of the HBO miniseries 'Task' (2025).

Away from the spotlight

Despite his rising profile, Owen Teague keeps his personal life fiercely guarded. He does not parade relationships or private details, preferring the attention to fall on his work. Discreet and devoted to his craft, he has earned a reputation as one of the actors of his generation most able to vanish completely inside every character he plays.
