Biography
Rupert Alexander Lloyd Grint was born on 24 August 1988 in Harlow, Essex, the eldest of five children of a racing memorabilia dealer, and grew up in a Hertfordshire village with no show business connections at all. Asked at school what he wanted to be, his answer was an ice cream man. He got there in the end, though the route was strange.
At eleven he saw a 'Newsround' item about open auditions for the film versions of J.K. Rowling's books and sent in a homemade tape of himself rapping about why he should be Ron Weasley. It worked. In August 2000 he was unveiled alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, and he left school at sixteen because the shoots never stopped.
A decade at Hogwarts
He played Ron Weasley in all eight films, from 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' (2001), which won him a Satellite Award as best new talent, to 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II' (2011), at the time the fourth biggest box office hit in history. He spent his whole adolescence on those sets, and his Ron, loyal, terrified of spiders and master of the Hogwarts grimace, ended up as many fans' favourite of the trio.
Even mid franchise he tried other things: the school comedy 'Thunderpants' (2002) and, above all, 'Driving Lessons' (2006), in which he played assistant to a retired actress played by Julie Walters, his screen mother at Hogwarts. In 'Cherrybomb', a Belfast teen drama, he pushed hard for grown up material.
Life after Ron
Once the saga wrapped he tried a bit of everything: the hitman comedy 'Wild Target' with Bill Nighy and Emily Blunt, the Norwegian war drama 'Into the White', the unhinged 'Charlie Countryman', 'CBGB', where he played punk guitarist Cheetah Chrome, and the moon landing caper 'Moonwalkers'. He also voiced the lead in the UK dub of 'The Unbeatables', the animated film from Oscar winner Juan José Campanella, and lent his voice to 'Postman Pat: The Movie'.
The stage brought sturdier rewards. His West End debut in Jez Butterworth's 'Mojo' (2013), at the Harold Pinter Theatre, won him the WhatsOnStage Award for best London newcomer, and a year later he made his Broadway debut in 'It's Only a Play' with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.
Television is where he rebuilt himself. He produced and starred in 'Snatch', spun from the Guy Ritchie film 'Snatch', playing an upper class chancer. He faked a terminal illness in 'Sick Note' opposite Nick Frost, and chased suspects as Inspector Crome in the BBC's Christmas 2018 miniseries 'The ABC Murders', with John Malkovich as Poirot.
His best reviewed adult work came with 'Servant', the unnerving Apple TV+ chiller about a nanny, a grieving couple and a doll that may be something more, produced by M. Night Shyamalan. Across four seasons, from 2019 to 2023, he played Julian, the heroine's sceptical, wine guzzling brother, and picked up a Hollywood Critics Association award for it. It was the part that finally shook off Ron.
Shyamalan then took him to the cinema as one of the intruders, alongside Dave Bautista, in 'Knock at the Cabin'. He also turned up in 'Dreams in the Witch House', an episode of 'Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities' for Guillermo del Toro, and joined Radcliffe and Watson for the nostalgic 'Return to Hogwarts' reunion special in January 2022.
Ice cream, Instagram and a monster baby
He has been with actress Georgia Groome since 2011. They have two daughters: Wednesday, born in May 2020, and Goldie, who arrived in April 2025 and was introduced on Instagram with a deadpan "Secret Child Slightly Revealed", since the pregnancy had never been announced.
The family lives quietly in rural Hertfordshire, where he really did buy an ice cream van with his Potter earnings and hands out cones to the neighbours. His Instagram debut in November 2020, a photo with his elder daughter, set a Guinness World Record: a million followers in four hours and one minute, faster than anyone before. A lifelong Tottenham Hotspur fan, he also carried the Olympic torch through north London in 2012.
2026 is his biggest film year since the saga. 'Nightborn', a Finnish horror from Hanna Bergholm in which he and Seidi Haarla play new parents undone by what is growing in their home, premiered at the Berlinale. And in November 2026 comes 'Ebenezer', Ti West's horror leaning take on Dickens, with Grint as Bob Cratchit opposite the Scrooge of Johnny Depp and the Marley of Ian McKellen.
Then there is Ed Sheeran: Grint played an obsessed superfan in the 'Lego House' video in 2011 and returned as the same character, fourteen years on, in 2025's 'A Little More'. Not many child stars end up exactly where they wanted to be. Then again, how many of them wanted an ice cream van?
