Biography

The press calls her a scream queen, which is funny, because horror films terrify her. Samara Weaving has said she was frightened of scary movies as a child and still describes herself as a coward about them. She isn't chasing the genre either. Good scripts keep landing on her desk and they just happen, with irritating regularity, to involve someone chasing her with a weapon.

She was born in Adelaide on 23 February 1992, to an English father and a Maltese mother. Simon Weaving runs the Canberra International Film Festival and lectures at university; Helena Bezzina works as an art therapist. The family moved constantly, living in Singapore, Fiji and Indonesia, and she went to primary school in Jakarta. They didn't settle in Australia properly until 2005, in Canberra, where she attended Canberra Girls Grammar School and ended up vice drama captain.

Her parents had put her into acting classes early on to bring her out of her shell, and it took. She passed through the Singapore Dance Company and Canberra Youth Theatre before she turned eighteen. The surname carries weight in Australian film too: Hugo Weaving, Agent Smith in 'The Matrix' and Elrond in 'The Lord of the Rings', is her father's brother.

Four years of Summer Bay

She debuted in 2008 on the teen drama 'Out of the Blue', then joined 'Home and Away' the following year. She played Indi Walker from July 2009 to November 2013, well over three hundred episodes, and picked up an AACTA nomination for the role in 2012. She left at twenty one with nothing lined up, moved to Los Angeles and booked work on her first trip out.

The scream queen who hates being scared

Everything turned in 2017, three times over. She was the satanic babysitter in 'The Babysitter', the black comedy McG made for Netflix with Judah Lewis. She fought her way through an office gone feral in 'Mayhem' opposite Steven Yeun. And she turned up for a few minutes in Martin McDonagh's 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri' as the very young girlfriend of Frances McDormand's ex husband.

Confirmation came in 2019 with 'Ready or Not'. She plays Grace, a bride whose new in laws make her play hide and seek with shotguns on her wedding night. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed, and one shredded wedding dress later the label stuck for good.

What followed leaned the same way: 'Guns Akimbo' (2019) with Daniel Radcliffe, the sequel 'The Babysitter: Killer Queen', Bill's daughter Thea in 'Bill & Ted Face The Music' (2020) alongside Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, and Scarlett in 'Snake Eyes' (2021) with Henry Golding.

Prestige, television and three minute parts

Her television work has been deliberately scattered: 'Ash vs Evil Dead', the comedy 'SMILF', Irma Leopold in the Australian series 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' (2018), the alternate film industry Ryan Murphy dreamed up in 'Hollywood' (2020), and the sinister wellness retreat of 'Nine Perfect Strangers' (2021), where she shared scenes with Nicole Kidman.

On film she keeps mixing blockbusters with small parts. She's a silent era actress in Damien Chazelle's 'Babylon', opposite Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. She's a French aristocrat in 'Chevalier' next to Kelvin Harrison Jr. And she opens 'Scream VI' (2023) in a cold open that lasts about as long as you'd expect. She has also voiced Batty in '100% Wolf' and '200% Wolf'.

In 2024 she took on 'Azrael', a nearly wordless horror experiment directed by E.L. Katz. Then came three films in 2025: 'Borderline', in which she plays a pop star menaced by an obsessive fan, 'Eenie Meanie', where she drives getaway cars, and 'Carolina Caroline', the romantic crime thriller Adam Rehmeier took to Toronto with Kyle Gallner and Kyra Sedgwick, and which the critics went for in a big way.

2026 and the Marvel jump

She put the bloodstained dress back on this year. 'Ready or Not: Here I Come' reached cinemas in March with the same directors, Kathryn Newton as Grace's sister, plus Elijah Wood and Sarah Michelle Gellar. A month later came 'Over Your Dead Body', Jorma Taccone's black comedy about a married couple each plotting to kill the other, with Jason Segel, Timothy Olyphant and Juliette Lewis.

Then July brought the big one. Marvel picked her to play Emma Frost in the new 'X-Men' film Jake Schreier is preparing for 2028. Deadline reported that the White Queen had been one of the hardest roles in the ensemble to fill and that her test was simply too good to beat.

Behind the front door

She met the screenwriter Jimmy Warden on the set of 'The Babysitter'. They got engaged in March 2019 and married without telling anyone. The date has never been made public, and she didn't confirm she was married until a 2022 interview, where she dropped the word "husband" and moved on. In 2025 he made his directing debut with 'Borderline' and cast her in the lead. In June 2026 they confirmed the birth of their first daughter, whose name they haven't shared either.

She's an unembarrassed Harry Potter obsessive with a Deathly Hallows tattoo, and a serious gamer. Four years of soap, a decade of running from murderers and now a Marvel contract: not bad for someone who still doesn't much enjoy being frightened.
