Synopsis

'Barefoot' is a dramatic film that tells the story of Eda, a Czech 8-years-old boy who is forced to leave the Praga he was born in the Second World War due to the nazi occupation of the city. Thus, the kid moves on to a little town in the countryside where he used to pass his holidays, because in this village live most of his family. Eda will need to confront the change from the busy urban life to the excited rural life, the new attraction for girls and the discover of dark pasts in his family.

'Barefoot' is the film which the director Jan Sverak comes back. He won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1996 with the film 'Kolya'. This new story is based in a book written by his father.

What the critics say

  • The Hollywood ReporterDeborah Young "Particularly impressive is the casual integration of Eda?s fantasies in the background of realistic scenes. Michal Novinski's soundtrack resonates with joy".

Trivia

  • Poor box office

The critical panning, and poor box office receipts resulted in 20th Century Fox canceling the Blu-ray release of the film and instead releasing it on standard DVD.

  • A long journey

It took 15 years for father and son, the co-authors Jan and Zdenek Sverak, to develop the script for 'Barefoot'.

  • Based in a true story

The script is based on his father's childhood memories, in a child's point of view.

  • A curious casting

To ensure he would cast the best possible young actors, Jan Sverak applied a new casting method of having each child of 800 who auditioned tell a joke so he could see verbal skills, sense of humor and ability to remember and deliver a story.

  • A prequel

This film is a prequel of a prior film called 'The Elementary School', released in 1991.
