Synopsis

First feature by Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh, which is based on the short film of the same name, which they made after having made a series of documentary portraits about the inhabitants of the so-called Cité Gagarine, in 2015, at the request of some commissioned architect friends to carry out a study on the future demolition of the urbanisation. 'Gagarine' was shot in 2019, shortly before the demolition of old Urban Action Program

Youri (Alseni Bathily) is 16 years old and has lived all her life in the Gagarine Towers, in Urban Action Program located in Ivry-sur-Seine, a commune adjoining the 13th arrondissement of Paris. His dream is to become an astronaut. When he learns of the plans to demolish the entire apartment block, Youri embarks with his friends Diana (Lyna Khoudri) and Houssan (Jamil McCraven) on a mission to save the building, transforming it into his peculiar 'spaceship' before to disappear into space forever.

'Gagarine' had the help and collaboration of the real residents of the towers, who sought to give visibility to their social situation. The film also had the support of the French Space Observatory and the Cnes cultural laboratory, as part of a documentary research residency and excerpts from the graphic script, which were published in the creative magazine Espace(s), in its volume 19.

Liatard and Trouilh's feature film debut won the Best Actor award for Alseni Bathily at the 17th Seville European Film Festival, as well as being nominated for the Discovery Award at the 2020 European Film Awards. In 2021 , was nominated for Best First Feature at the 47th César Awards ceremony. Starring also Finnegan Oldfield, Farida Rahouadj and Denis Lavant
