Passion Fish

'Passion Fish' is a U.S. drama written and directed by John Sayles. It premiered in the United States on December 9, 1992. Despite excellent reviews and its two Oscar nominations, the film barely manages to gross $4.8 million, below its budget of $5 million. It is starring Mary McDonnell and Alfre Woodard.

May-Alice Culhane is a well-known soap opera star whose life changes overnight when she suffers a car accident and becomes paralyzed. This forces her to put her career on hold and return to her family home in Louisiana, where she tries to drown her sorrows in alcohol. To cope with her daily life, she has to hire a series of nurses who leave the house one after another due to her aggressive nature.

One day, Chantelle Blades shows up at the door. What initially seems like just another nurse on May-Alice's list of caregivers turns into a relationship of friendship and overcoming challenges, each with their personal issues. From that point on, both of their lives change forever.

The cast of 'Passion Fish' also includes Vondie Curtis-Hall, David Strathairn, Leo Burmester, Nora Dunn, and Angela Bassett. Filmed entirely in the Acadian region of Louisiana, the film receives unanimous critical support for its cast, especially for its leads, McDonnell and Woodard. The latter wins the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress.
