Synopsis
A working-class family living in Newcastle fights day after day against the precariousness, job uncertainty and the heavy burden of bills that began with the 2008 financial crisis. Ricky and his wife have always held down consistent jobs but, in this harsh financial environment, it's not enough to allow them to live comfortably. Ricky, the father of the family, is made unemployed and as an alternative he becomes a self-employed delivery boy, trying to continue supporting his family. Abby, his wife, also makes a sacrifice to help her husband by selling her car and buying a van with the money they make from it which will help Ricky to work and, in turn, will allow their family to be able to afford to live better lives. However, Ricky is not as free as most self-employed workers are to determine their own business. Ricky's success depends on the transport company that assigns the routes, controlling his day and his performance, which he soon realises also affects the wellbeing of his family. It is then that a hellish spiral begins for the whole family in the form a new efficiency-measuring system named "uberisation". Although the family unit is strong, their close ties threaten to snap under the pressure.
The film is directed by Ken Loach ('I, Daniel Blake') and stars Kris Hitchen and Debbie Honeywood.

It?s fierce, open and angry, unironised and unadorned, about a vital contemporary issue whose implications you somehow don?t hear on the news.

A social and moral critique that we can expect from Loach, but without the sobering dialogues that could make their characters look less human.

"Another bittersweet crowd pleaser about despondent families striving to make ends meet."

Based on real events
The story takes partial inspiration from the experiences of Don Lane, a courier for DPD who died January 2018 after working through illness in the Christmas delivery rush. He had skipped several hospital appointments to treat his type 1 diabetes because he had been charged £150 by DPD when he missed deliveries to attend an appointment and feared further charges.

How the idea arise?
When Paul Laverty and Ken Loach went to food banks to get some information for 'I, Daniel Blake', they discovered that many people who went to get some food had a job - partial time and contracts which didn't specify a minimum timetable. It's a new type of exploitation. The economy called "gig economy". Little by little they thought that maybe was a good idea to do another film.
-
How did they document?
They were helped by a man who directed warehouse next to the place they were filming. He indicated how the decorate must be. Every driver in the film work or used to work as delivery couriers. When they filmed their scenes, they knew what it was about. They knew the process, how it works and the pressure they were subdued to deliver on time.
