FAR FROM THE MCU

'Venom' Cannot Exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Venom is one of the most loved villains in the Marvel 'Spider-Man' comics, but this one scene from the latest film suggests that the characters as we know them on screen cannot exist in the same universe.

Ever since the attempted extraterrestrial invasion of Earth in 'The Avengers', the existence of aliens has been accepted by everyone within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As theorised by Comicbook, this therefore rules out the possibility that 'Venom' could ever belong to the same universe as 'The Avengers'. It boils down to one specific scene in which Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) reacts with shock to Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) informing him of the existence of the alien lifeforms, the simbiotes. 'Venom', therefore, cannot occur in the same universe as the other Marvel superheroes, as in that world everyone on Earth has already come to terms with alien existence.

Venom and Spider-Man

The film was made by Sony, unlike the other recent Marvel comic films, and its producers have never made it clear what the relation is between 'Venom' and the Marvel universe. In June Amy Pascal, the producer of both 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' and 'Venom', announced that both films transpire in the same universe although in different places. However, Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, stressed that 'Venom' was a "Sony project" and that they had no intention of incorporating it into the Marvel universe.

Spider-Man vs. Venom

Watching Peter Parker (Tom Holland) battling against Venom is something which still seems far from being a horizons of possibility. Matt Tolmach, another producer of 'Venom' accepted that they could not use Spider-Man in this film, but that they would love to include him in future projects. However, Holland signed a contract for six films, which will end with the film after 'Spider-Man: Far From Home'. Whether this contract will be renewed for further projects, only time will tell.

Sony owns the rights to more than 900 Marvel comic characters, including Spider-Man. Therefore, once Holland's contract with Marvel Studios ends, it is possible that Sony will take back his character from the MCU and place him within their own. A Spider-Man vs. Venom dual could be just around the corner...
