Godzilla Minus Zero
About the Godzilla saga
Godzilla, the giant monster born of nuclear testing, debuted in 'Godzilla' (1954), directed by Ishirō Honda for Japan's Toho studio: a metaphor for the horror of Hiroshima and Nagasaki released just nine years after the bombs. Toho has since produced more than thirty films about the monster, the longest-running film series in history.
'Shin Godzilla' (2016), by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, reinvented the monster as a satire of Japanese bureaucracy facing disaster, with echoes of Fukushima, and won the Japan Academy award for best film.
Takashi Yamazaki's 'Godzilla Minus One' (2023), set in post-war, devastated Japan, made history by winning the Oscar for best visual effects, the first for a Godzilla film, on a budget far below Hollywood's. Its follow-up, 'Godzilla Minus Zero', opens on 6 November 2026. In the US, the monster stars in its own series, the MonsterVerse.
