John Rambo
About the Rambo saga
John Rambo, the Vietnam veteran created by novelist David Morrell in 'First Blood' (1972), is, alongside Rocky, Sylvester Stallone's great character. In Ted Kotcheff's 'First Blood' (1982), the former Green Beret is hounded by a small-town sheriff and escapes into the woods: a drama about forgotten veterans more than an action film.
The character changed with 'Rambo: First Blood Part II' (1985), co-written by James Cameron, which sent him back to Vietnam to rescue prisoners and made him an icon of eighties action. 'Rambo III' (1988) took him to Afghanistan.
Stallone directed and starred in 'Rambo' (2008), set in Burma, and returned in 'Rambo: Last Blood' (2019). The series runs to five films, and a prequel about the character's youth, 'John Rambo', is due in June 2027.
