About the Top Gun saga
'Top Gun' is the series about US Navy fighter pilots that made Tom Cruise a star. 'Top Gun' (1986), directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, follows Pete Mitchell, Maverick, a brilliant and reckless pilot at the Navy's elite school, alongside Val Kilmer and Kelly McGillis.
Its aerial sequences, aviator sunglasses and soundtrack defined the eighties, and Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" won the Oscar for best original song.
Thirty-six years later, Joseph Kosinski's 'Top Gun: Maverick' (2022) put Cruise back in the cockpit to train a new generation of pilots, with scenes shot in real jets. It took more than $1.4 billion worldwide, is the highest-grossing film of Cruise's career, was nominated for the best picture Oscar and won best sound. Paramount is preparing 'Top Gun 3', still undated.
