Biography

Through the nineties he was the actor who was going to be a huge star and somehow never quite became one. In the 2000s he reinvented himself as the best comic supporting player on American television. And since 21 October 2021 his name has been attached to something else entirely: the shot that killed the cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of 'Rust'.

He was born on 3 April 1958 in Amityville, New York, and grew up in Massapequa on Long Island, the eldest of six. His father taught at a high school and coached the football team; he died of cancer in 1983, when Alec was 25. His three brothers, Daniel, William and Stephen, all became actors too.

He started a politics degree at George Washington University meaning to go into public life, then switched at twenty to the drama school at New York University. A daily soap called 'The Doctors' and a run on 'Knots Landing' paid for the early years.

Jack Ryan and the stardom that didn't happen

1988 was his year. He turned up in 'Beetlejuice' for Tim Burton, in Mike Nichols's 'Working Girl', and in Jonathan Demme's 'Married to the Mob' with Michelle Pfeiffer.

Two years later he was the screen's first Jack Ryan in 'The Hunt for Red October' (1990), opposite Sean Connery. The franchise looked set to run for years, but he wanted to do 'A Streetcar Named Desire' on Broadway instead, couldn't come to terms with Paramount, and the part went to Harrison Ford. That decision shaped everything after it.

The stage worked out, at least. He played Stanley Kowalski opposite Jessica Lange in 1992 and got a Tony nomination. The same year he delivered the scene people still quote, the seven minutes of 'Glengarry Glen Ross' in which he humiliates an entire office of salesmen in front of Al Pacino and Jack Lemmon. The character isn't in David Mamet's play; he wrote it for the film.

A thin decade followed. He led 'The Shadow' (1994), meant to start a franchise and starting nothing, and worked with Kim Basinger on 'Malice' (1993) and 'The Getaway' (1994). He settled into support, from 'Notting Hill' (1999) to 'Pearl Harbor' (2001).

The best supporting actor in American film

What rescued him was accepting that his place was off to the side. In Wayne Kramer's 'The Cooler' (2003) he is an old school Las Vegas casino boss, violent and sentimental at once, and it brought his only Oscar nomination, for supporting actor.

After that he worked with nearly everyone. Twice for Martin Scorsese, on 'The Aviator' (2004) and 'The Departed' (2006). Once for Robert De Niro as director, on 'The Good Shepherd' (2006). And three times for Woody Allen: 'Alice' (1990), 'To Rome with Love' (2012) and 'Blue Jasmine' (2013), as Cate Blanchett's swindler husband.

He did mainstream comedy for Nancy Meyers in 'It's Complicated' (2009), played Julianne Moore's husband in 'Still Alice' (2014), and showed up in Spike Lee's 'BlacKkKlansman' (2018) and Edward Norton's 'Motherless Brooklyn' (2019).

He also quietly took up residence in blockbusters, as the CIA chief in 'Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation' (2015) and 'Mission: Impossible - Fallout' (2018), and in voice work from 'Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa' (2008) and 'Rise of the Guardians' (2012) to 'The Boss Baby' (2017).

His temper has always been part of the public figure. He is an outspoken Democrat who was asked for years whether he would run for something, he has had repeated rows with photographers and a couple of minor arrests after street arguments, and in 2007 a voicemail leaked in which he insulted his daughter Ireland, then eleven, and he had to apologise publicly.

Jack Donaghy and the SNL Trump

His best part is on television. From 2006 to 2013 he was Jack Donaghy in '30 Rock', the Republican, womanising, oddly lovable network executive Tina Fey wrote as a counterweight to her own lead. It won him two Emmys, three Golden Globes and eight Screen Actors Guild awards. Before that he had been Karen's lover in 'Will & Grace'.

He holds the record for hosting 'Saturday Night Live', seventeen times, and between 2016 and 2020 he played Donald Trump there, blond wig and pursed mouth, which brought another Emmy in 2017 and a considerable number of enemies. Alongside it he hosted the game show 'Match Game' from 2016 to 2021, made an interview podcast called 'Here's the Thing', and published a memoir, 'Nevertheless', in 2017.

'Rust'

On 21 October 2021, at a ranch outside Santa Fe, he was rehearsing a scene with a revolver that should have held dummy rounds. It fired a live bullet, killing Halyna Hutchins, the film's 42 year old cinematographer, and wounding the director, Joel Souza. He has always maintained that he was told the gun was cold and that he never pulled the trigger.

New Mexico prosecutors charged him with involuntary manslaughter in January 2023, dropped the charge that April, and indicted him again in January 2024. The trial opened on 9 July 2024 and on the 12th the judge dismissed it with prejudice, having found that the prosecution had withheld ammunition evidence from the defence. The state abandoned its appeal that December.

The film's armourer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in March 2024 and served eighteen months. The assistant director pleaded no contest to a misdemeanour charge of negligent use of a weapon.

The civil side is still running. The Hutchins family reached a settlement in 2022 that allowed the film to be completed, and in April 2026 a Los Angeles judge ruled that he must answer a negligence claim from the gaffer Serge Svetnoy before a jury, with trial set for 12 October 2026. His own suit against the New Mexico prosecutors has been dismantled piece by piece, mostly on the immunity that shields prosecutors.

'Rust', which he stars in, co-wrote and produced, was finished in Montana and opened in American cinemas in May 2025 to almost no business.

Trump again, and a household of nine

His most recent appearance came somewhere unexpected. In 'Torrente presidente', released in Spain on 13 March 2026, he plays Donald Trump once more for Santiago Segura, with Kevin Spacey as the power behind the throne. He had already been in 'Torrente 5: Operación Eurovegas' back in 2014.

On 1 October 2026 'The Trial of Alec Baldwin' opened in New York, the documentary Rory Kennedy shot by following him from 2023 to the end of the case. He has said himself that it shows him at his worst.

He was married to Kim Basinger between 1993 and 2002, and they had a daughter, Ireland. In 2012 he married Hilaria Thomas, with whom he has had seven children between 2013 and 2022, and in 2025 TLC aired eight episodes of 'The Baldwins', a reality series about the house, the children and the fallout from 'Rust'. At 68 he is still working a great deal and talking rather more.
