Biography

He was born in Hammersmith, London, on 15 February 1990 and grew up on a council estate in Chelsea, raised by his mother, who was working as a club promoter at the time. From her he got his love of film, and his middle name too: Robilliard, after a poet friend of hers who died before he was born.

He left school early to play semi-professional football, and when that didn't work out he ended up modelling for Next and Reebok and working the shop floor at Dover Street Market. Nothing on that CV suggested that a decade later he'd be on every shortlist for James Bond.

From modelling to British television

His first proper roles arrived in 2014, two at once. On screen he led 'Queen And Country' (2014), in which John Boorman closed off the autobiographical story he had begun with 'Hope and Glory'. On television he fronted 'Glue', E4's teen drama. That same year BAFTA named him one of its Breakthrough Brits, which amounted to an official notice that he was worth watching.

Supporting parts followed in productions large and small: the singer of the cornered punk band in Jeremy Saulnier's 'Green Room' (2015), opposite Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots; 'Victor Frankenstein' (2015); 'Assassin's Creed' (2016) with Michael Fassbender; and Prince Anatole Kuragin in the BBC's 'War & Peace' (2016). He also took the lead in 'Tramps' (2016) and 'The Only Living Boy in New York' (2017).

What really made his name, though, was a BBC thriller. In 'The Capture' (2019) he played Shaun Emery, an ex-soldier incriminated by CCTV footage of a crime he insists he didn't commit. The part brought him a BAFTA Television Award nomination for Best Actor.

Hogwarts, Austen and a rowing boat

To a mainstream audience, Turner is first and foremost Theseus Scamander, the auror and older brother of the magizoologist played by Eddie Redmayne, a character introduced in 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald' (2018) and brought back for 'Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore' (2022).

Between the two he put on a frock coat to play Frank Churchill, the suitor who takes half the film to turn up, in Autumn de Wilde's 'Emma' (2020), with Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role.

His two most physical jobs came later. George Clooney cast him as Joe Rantz, the hard-up oarsman who ends up at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, in 'The Boys in the Boat' (2023). Then came 'Masters of the Air' (2024), where he played Major John "Bucky" Egan, one of the two pilots at the centre of Apple TV+'s war series.

Dua Lipa and a wedding in two parts

His private life has filled as many column inches as his filmography. From 2015 to 2019 he was in a relationship with the actress Vanessa Kirby, and since January 2024 his name has been tied to Dua Lipa's.

The singer confirmed their engagement almost in passing during a 'British Vogue' interview in June 2025, and the wedding followed a year later in two stages: a quiet civil ceremony at Old Marylebone Town Hall in London on 31 May 2026, then several days of celebrations in Bagheria, Sicily, on 6 June. He wore a navy double-breasted suit to the first one; her Schiaparelli outfit kept the fashion pages busy for a week.

The next 007?

2025 and 2026 have been his busiest years yet. He played Luke in 'Eternity' (2025), the romantic comedy about the afterlife led by Elizabeth Olsen and Miles Teller, and went to Cornwall to shoot 'Rose of Nevada' (2025) with Mark Jenkin and George MacKay, a tale of fishermen and slipped time that premiered at the Venice Film Festival. August 2026 brought 'One Night Only', Will Gluck's comedy with Monica Barbaro, which the critics did not take to.

What's ahead carries more weight. In January 2027 Apple TV+ releases 'Neuromancer', a ten-episode adaptation of the William Gibson novel that invented cyberpunk, with Turner as the hacker Case and Mark Strong in the cast. All through 2026, meanwhile, the British press has placed him among the actors called in to screen-test for the Bond that Denis Villeneuve will direct, alongside names like Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor. Neither Amazon MGM nor the producers have confirmed a thing, so the question stays open: will the lad from the Chelsea estate end up in the dinner jacket?
