Biography

Some performers are impossible to label, and LaKeith Stanfield seems determined to be the most elusive of them all. Magnetic, eccentric and faintly otherworldly, he can chill you to the bone in a raw drama and throw you completely in a surreal comedy. He came into the world in San Bernardino, California, on 12 August 1991 and was raised between Riverside and Victorville, in a family that was poor and broken on both sides; acting took him by surprise at the age of fourteen, in his high-school drama club. His very first job already hinted at the double life to come: he played (and rapped as) Marcus, first in the short film and then in the feature 'Short Term 12' (2013), the only actor to appear in both versions.

A gallery of unpredictable roles

Through the second half of the decade he built a CV as eclectic as it was coherent. He was the activist Jimmie Lee Jackson in 'Selma' (2014), slipped into the skin of a young Snoop Dogg in 'Straight Outta Compton' (2015) and turned up in the rowdy 'Dope' (2015). His face was branded into recent horror history thanks to 'Get Out' (2017), the Jordan Peele phenomenon in which his character blurted out a blood-curdling warning. From there he tried his hand at everything: he led the deranged anti-capitalist satire 'Sorry to Bother You' (2018), dreamed up an oddball L in 'Death Note' (2017), sweated through 'Uncut Gems' (2019) and slotted into the ensemble of 'Knives Out' (2019).

Darius and an Oscar oddity

Mass recognition, though, came to him on the small screen. His Darius in 'Atlanta' (2016), Donald Glover's series, is one of those cult characters remembered line by line: a placid, baffling, philosophising sidekick tailor-made for his register. On film, his high point to date has a name of its own: 'Judas and the Black Messiah' (2021), in which he nailed the FBI informant Bill O'Neal. The role earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, in one of the most talked-about quirks in the history of the awards: both he and his co-star Daniel Kaluuya competed as supporting actors despite being the film's two outright leads, and it was Kaluuya who walked away with the statuette.

Between the big screen and the microphone

He has not stopped since. He has strung together leads as different as the Clarence of the audacious 'The Book of Clarence' (2023), the family man trapped in Disney's 'Haunted Mansion' (2023) and the South African photographer of 'Ernest Cole: Lost and Found' (2024). And 2025 has kept him on screens almost without a break, with 'Die My Love', 'Roofman' and 'Play Dirty'. To all that you have to add his other life, as a musician: under the alias Htiekal (his first name spelled backwards) he has been rapping for years, is a member of the band Moors and in 2025 signed to the legendary Def Jam label. A father of several children, guarded and given to cryptic interviews, he cultivates mystery both on and off set. In his early thirties, with an album on the way and several releases a year, he remains exactly what he was at the start: an actor impossible to pin down.
