Biography

In February 2006 he was flying home from Berlin, where The Road to Guantanamo had just won the Silver Bear for best director, when police pulled him aside at Luton airport. By his account they put him in an arm lock, took his phone and asked whether he had become an actor to further the Muslim struggle. He was 23 and had made exactly one film.

Twenty years on, Riz Ahmed has an Emmy, an Oscar and an Oscar nomination for a lead performance. No British Muslim actor had managed any of the three before him.

Wembley, Oxford and a pirate radio mic

He was born in Wembley, north west London, on 1 December 1982. His parents had come over from Karachi in the 1970s, his father working as a shipping broker; his brother is a psychiatrist and his sister a lawyer. He won a scholarship to Merchant Taylors' School and read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Christ Church, Oxford, and only then trained as an actor at the Central School of Speech and Drama.

He was rapping as Riz MC well before any of that, on pirate radio and in freestyle battles, and he ran a club night in Oxford to pay for it. His track 'Post 9/11 Blues' was kept off British radio in 2006 for being politically sensitive, the same year he was named best MC at the Asian Music Awards. Later came Swet Shop Boys, his duo with the American rapper Heems, the album 'Cashmere' (2016) and his own record 'The Long Goodbye' (2020).

Terrorist, prisoner, suspect

His first part was Shafiq Rasul, one of the three young men from Tipton who ended up held at Guantánamo Bay without charge. Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross shot it as a dramatised documentary, and it took the directing prize in Berlin.

Then in 2010 came Four Lions, Chris Morris's comedy about four hopeless would-be jihadis from the north of England, with Ahmed as the one who thinks he is in charge. It is still one of the most awkward and most quoted British films of that decade.

The years around it kept him on the same ground: Centurion (2010), Trishna (2011) with Freida Pinto, The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012), Ill Manors (2012) and Closed Circuit (2013).

In 2016 he wrote an essay called 'Typecast as a Terrorist' for the anthology 'The Good Immigrant'. It set out the Luton story and three stages in the career of a British South Asian actor: the flat stereotype, the part that argues with the stereotype, and what he called the promised land, a character whose story isn't tied to where he's from. That same year he carried City Of Tiny Lights as a London private detective.

Nightcrawler, Star Wars and the Emmy

The part that got America's attention was Rick in Nightcrawler (2014), the assistant Jake Gyllenhaal pays almost nothing to drive him around Los Angeles at night while he films corpses.

Two blockbusters followed in a row. He was Bodhi Rook, the Imperial pilot who defects, in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opposite Felicity Jones, and he worked for Paul Greengrass on Jason Bourne.

That same summer HBO put out The Night Of, with Ahmed as Naz, a student from Queens charged with a murder he can't remember and slowly reshaped by Rikers Island. In September 2017 it won him the Emmy for best actor in a limited series, the first won by a Muslim actor or by a man of Asian descent in a lead acting category. He was up for a second one that night as a guest on Girls.

Hollywood kept calling. He played Carlton Drake, the billionaire breeding alien parasites, in Venom (2018) opposite Tom Hardy, and turned up the same year in Jacques Audiard's western The Sisters Brothers.

Sound of Metal, and an Oscar for something else

In Sound of Metal he is Ruben, the drummer in a two-person metal band who loses his hearing within weeks. He spent months learning drums and American Sign Language, and shot much of it wearing a device that blocked his own hearing so he couldn't anticipate anything. Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci are alongside him.

It brought him the Independent Spirit Award for best male lead and, in 2021, nominations for the Oscar, the BAFTA and the Golden Globe. He was the first Muslim actor nominated for best actor, a headline he met with more discomfort than pleasure, saying more than once that he'd prefer those firsts to stop being news.

Around the same time he released Mogul Mowgli (2020), which he co-wrote with its director Bassam Tariq. He plays a British Pakistani rapper floored by an autoimmune illness days before the tour meant to make his name. It won him the BIFA for best debut screenwriter and was nominated for the outstanding British film BAFTA.

The Oscar itself arrived by a side door. In 2022 he collected best live action short film for 'The Long Goodbye', twelve minutes directed by Aneil Karia in which a British Pakistani family is dragged out of its own house by a far right militia. He has also produced other people's work, including Flee (2021) and Joyland (2022), the first Pakistani film selected at Cannes.

Bond, Hamlet and Tom Cruise

Recent years have split between hired work and his own. In David Mackenzie's Relay (2025) he is a fixer who buys off corporate whistleblowers and only ever speaks through a telephone relay service for deaf users, with Lily James on the other end of the line. For Wes Anderson he played Prince Farouk in The Phoenician Scheme (2025).

His Hamlet, which he also produced, moves the play into present day London and a wealthy South Asian family, with Aneil Karia directing and Morfydd Clark, Art Malik, Timothy Spall and Joe Alwyn around him. It played Telluride in August 2025 and reached British cinemas on 6 February 2026.

The most personal thing he's done is Bait, six episodes he created and wrote for Prime Video, which premiered at Sundance and went out on 25 March 2026. He plays Shah Latif, a struggling British Pakistani actor whose life comes apart across four days after an audition to be the next James Bond. Bassam Tariq and Tom George direct, with Guz Khan, Sheeba Chaddha and Ritu Arya. It brought him another Emmy nomination, though he's been firm that the show isn't autofiction.

His latest is Digger, the Alejandro G. Iñárritu satire released in October 2026, where he is Dr Ganesh, the scientist trying to warn anyone who will listen about the disaster set off by the oil man played by Tom Cruise. Critics split hard over the film and much less over him. He does voice work too, from the knight at the centre of Nimona (2023) to Professor Snape in the full cast 'Harry Potter' audio editions Audible began releasing in November 2025.

He has never been quiet off screen, and it has cost him something. A speech he gave in the House of Commons in 2017 about representation led two researchers to devise the Riz Test, a sort of Bechdel test for Muslim characters. Since 2023 he has called publicly for an end to the indiscriminate bombing of Gaza and signed several industry letters. In May 2026 he told the journalist Mehdi Hasan that British intelligence had tried to recruit him as an informant on three separate occasions.

About his private life he gives very little. He has been married since 2020 to the American novelist Fatima Farheen Mirza, whom he met in New York while preparing 'Sound of Metal', the two of them squabbling over the same café plug socket. In August 2025 he confirmed he is a father and offered not one further detail. Asked which role he was proudest of, he said being a dad, "because it's not about me". Of the three stages he described in that essay, he has been in the third for a while now.
