Biography

On a July morning in 2022, Sydney Sweeney picked up the phone and called her mother in tears: at 24, she'd just received the first Emmy nominations of her career, two of them on the same day, one for playing Cassie in 'Euphoria' and another for Olivia in 'The White Lotus'. Barely four years earlier she'd been an unknown doing guest spots; a decade before that, a kid from the Pacific Northwest armed with a business plan and a stubborn streak.

Sydney Bernice Sweeney was born on 12 September 1997 in Spokane, Washington, to a lawyer mother and a father who worked in healthcare, and grew up in a lakeside house in Idaho that had been in the family for five generations. She tried everything as a kid, from football and wakeboarding to mixed martial arts, where she competed against boys. Nobody in the family had any connection to show business. Even so, at 13 she pitched her parents a five year business plan, slides included, to persuade them to let her try acting in Los Angeles.

It worked. An audition for the low budget zombie film 'ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction' (2009), shooting near her home, got her started, and small parts followed, among them young Alice in 'The Ward' (2010), still the last film directed by John Carpenter. The whole family ended up moving to Los Angeles while she ground through years of auditions, hearing no far more often than yes, and one off episodes of shows like 'Criminal Minds' and 'Grey's Anatomy'.

Three shows in one year

Her breakthrough came in triplicate. In 2018 she was teenage Emaline in Netflix's 'Everything Sucks!', the unsettling handmaid Eden in 'The Handmaid's Tale' and the fragile Alice in 'Sharp Objects', sharing scenes with Amy Adams. A year later Quentin Tarantino cast her as one of the Manson girls in 'Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood' with Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, a film that went on to win two Oscars.

Then came Euphoria. In Sam Levinson's HBO teen drama, led by Zendaya, she played Cassie Howard, the neediest and most heartbroken of the group, a character adored, pitied and endlessly memed; her season two image of Cassie hiding in a bathtub became one of the most shared television moments of the year. The show made her a global star overnight, and its second season in 2022 drew HBO's biggest audiences since 'Game of Thrones'.

Mike White's first season of The White Lotus, the Hawaiian resort satire that would grow into an anthology juggernaut, where she played the Nietzsche reading college cynic Olivia Mossbacher, completed the one two punch that led to that double Emmy morning; the show itself won the Emmy for best limited series.

In between she became a streaming fixture, fronting Amazon's musical horror film 'Nocturne' (2020) and the erotic thriller 'The Voyeurs' (2021), her first proper film lead, both projects that leaned on her name to find an audience.

Reality Winner, a nun and a Shakespeare romcom

In 2023 she proved there was more to her than a fan phenomenon. In 'Reality', the HBO drama, premiered at the Berlinale, whose script reproduces an FBI interrogation transcript word for word, she played Reality Winner, the intelligence contractor jailed for leaking documents, and drew the best reviews of her career to that point, in a chamber piece set almost entirely in one bare room.

Months later she produced and starred opposite Glen Powell in 'Anyone But You', a romantic comedy loosely built on 'Much Ado About Nothing' that nobody saw coming and that took over 220 million dollars worldwide. Her chemistry with Powell fuelled months of romance rumours, which she later admitted they happily let run as part of the film's promotion.

Through her company Fifty-Fifty Films she also revived 'Immaculate' (2024), a nun horror film she'd auditioned for at 16: when that version collapsed, she bought the rights years later, got it made with director Michael Mohan and turned it into a tidy hit. Not everything landed. 'Madame Web' (2024), the Spider adjacent adventure with Dakota Johnson, crashed loudly. She bounced between Ron Howard's survival thriller 'Eden', alongside Jude Law and Ana de Armas, and 'Echo Valley', playing the troubled daughter of Julianne Moore.

The Housemaid and 400 million reasons

2025 showed both sides of her ambition. In 'Christy', which premiered in Toronto and which she produced, she gained over two stone to play Christy Martin, the women's boxing pioneer who survived a murder attempt by her own husband, played by Ben Foster; the film sank at the box office, but her performance was singled out by critics. Then in December came 'The Housemaid', Paul Feig's twisty thriller based on Freida McFadden's bestseller, with Amanda Seyfried.

Made for 35 million dollars, it closed in on 400 million worldwide, bringing the flavour of nineties erotic thrillers back to multiplexes and becoming comfortably the biggest hit of her career. A sequel, 'The Housemaid's Secret', is already dated for December 2027.

In spring 2026 she said goodbye to Cassie in the third and final season of Euphoria, in which the character plans a lavish wedding to Jacob Elordi's Nate; HBO confirmed the show was over for good the day the finale aired. Next up are 'Scandalous!', the directing debut of Colman Domingo with David Jonsson, and a Netflix blockbuster based on the Japanese robot saga Gundam.

Broncos, billboards and Scooter Braun

Off screen her hobbies are not standard Hollywood issue: she restores vintage cars, and the 1969 Ford Bronco she fixed up with her own hands has a fanbase of its own online. Brands queue up for her, from Miu Miu to Armani Beauty, and in 2025 she fronted an American Eagle campaign that became one of the most debated adverts of the year in America. A few months earlier, a soap bar marketed as being made with her own bathwater sold out within hours.

In her private life, she ended her engagement to businessman Jonathan Davino in 2025 after around seven years together, a relationship the pair had always kept deliberately quiet, and since 2026 she's been in a relationship with music executive Scooter Braun, with whom she was first linked in mid 2025, made public at the premiere of Euphoria's final season.

That five year business plan expired long ago, comfortably beaten. She's 28, she produces her own hits, she picks her own scripts and she can sell out soap in an afternoon. Who'd bet against her now?
