Biography

Before she could act, Zendaya modelled. She was a child in catalogues for Macy's and Old Navy, a backup dancer in a Sears advert, and a hip hop student in Oakland from the age of eight. Her parents, Kazembe Ajamu Coleman and Claire Stoermer, were both teachers, and she grew up half in her mother's school and half in the theatre next door to it.

Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman was born in Oakland, California, on 1 September 1996. She went to the Oakland School for the Arts at eleven. By fourteen she was on Disney Channel, and by twenty four she held a record that still stands.

Disney, and how she got out of it

She auditioned for one part in 'Shake It Up!' and was given the other. As Rocky Blue from 2010 to 2013 she became a Disney fixture, released an album on the company's Hollywood Records label, and at sixteen reached the final of 'Dancing with the Stars', the show's youngest contestant up to that point.

What she did next is the interesting part. She agreed to lead 'K.C. Undercover' on conditions: a producer credit, at eighteen, and a say in who the character was so she would not be written as the usual clueless teenager. Disney said yes. The show ran until 2018 and taught her the job from the other side of the camera. Before it she had done the rounds of Disney guest slots, turning up in 'Good Luck Charlie' and 'A.N.T. Farm'.

Rue

'Euphoria' arrived in 2019. Sam Levinson's HBO series casts her as Rue Bennett, a seventeen year old addict who also narrates it, and the performance buried whatever anyone thought they knew about her. The Guardian called it mesmerising. Most of the rest of the press agreed.

She won the Emmy for lead actress in a drama in 2020, at twenty four, the youngest winner the category has had, and it was her first nomination. She was also the second Black woman to take it, after Viola Davis. She won again in 2022 for the second season, making her the youngest two time acting winner in the awards' history, and picked up four nominations that year including one as an executive producer of the show. The Golden Globe followed in January 2023.

Series three landed on 12 April 2026, eight episodes picking the story up five years later with the cast out of school and scattered. Sydney Sweeney, Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi and Maude Apatow all returned.

Three franchises at once

She has been MJ since 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' (2017), through 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' (2019) and 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' (2021). That first job is also where she met Tom Holland.

The same year she was Anne Wheeler, the trapeze artist in 'The Greatest Showman' with Hugh Jackman. Her duet with Zac Efron, "Rewrite the Stars", went multi platinum and remains the biggest thing on her music CV.

Then Arrakis. Denis Villeneuve cast her as Chani in 'Dune' (2021), where she is barely on screen, then handed her most of the emotional weight of 'Dune: Part Two' (2024) alongside Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson and Javier Bardem. Villeneuve has called her an autonomous creative force.

Between the big ones she has done a fair amount of voice work: the yeti Meechee in 'Smallfoot' (2018), a part in 'Duck Duck Goose' the same year, and Lola Bunny in 'Space Jam: A New Legacy' (2021) with LeBron James. She also turned up in 'The OA' in 2019.

The producer credit

In 'Challengers' (2024) she is Tashi Duncan, a tennis prodigy whose career ends with an injury and who then runs the two men in her life like a match she intends to win. Luca Guadagnino directed, with Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor. It premiered in Sydney in March 2024 and reached cinemas that April. Made for 55 million dollars, it took 96, and gave Guadagnino the biggest opening of his career.

She produced it too, credited alongside Amy Pascal and Guadagnino. That wasn't new either. During lockdown she made 'Malcolm & Marie' (2021) with John David Washington, shot in black and white with a tiny isolated crew, and produced that as well. A film about Ronnie Spector of The Ronettes is still to come, with Zendaya producing and starring, after Spector picked her for the part before she died.

Alongside all this she built a second reputation in fashion. Working with the stylist Law Roach for more than a decade, she made a habit of dressing on theme for whatever she was promoting, and in 2021 the American designers' council gave her its fashion icon award, the youngest person ever to get it.

Music is the thread she half dropped. A self titled album came out in 2013 with a single, 'Replay', that reached the Billboard Hot 100, and then she largely let it go. Euphoria pulled her back: she sings "All for Us" with Labrinth and wrote part of "I'm Tired". In April 2023 she walked onto his stage at Coachella unannounced to perform both, her first live appearance since a Los Angeles show in 2015.

The brand work is a business in itself. She has been an ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger since 2018, designing capsule collections with them, and since then for Lancôme, Bulgari, Valentino, Louis Vuitton and, from October 2025, Rolex.

The industry noticed the shift. Time put her on its list of the hundred most influential people in 2022, CinemaCon named her its star of the year in 2023, and she has used the platform steadily rather than loudly: voter registration drives with Michelle Obama's campaign in 2020, anti bullying work, and a run of interviews about what it is to be a young Black woman leading films of this size.

Summer 2026

This year has been relentless. April brought two things within days of each other: 'The Drama', an A24 romantic comedy written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli, with Robert Pattinson opposite her, and the third series of 'Euphoria'.

July brought two blockbusters a fortnight apart. On the 17th came 'The Odyssey', Christopher Nolan's Homer adaptation, shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras, with Zendaya as Athena opposite Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway. On the 31st she was MJ again in 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day', directed this time by Destin Daniel Cretton, with Peter Parker living in a city that no longer remembers him.

December closes the year with 'Dune: Part Three', the end of Villeneuve's trilogy, opening on the 18th against the new Avengers film. 'Shrek 5' follows in 2027, with her in the voice cast.

She talks about her private life rarely and visibly reluctantly, having once described the attention as strange and invasive. She met Tom Holland on the first Spider-Man in 2016 and they took five years to confirm they were together. He proposed over Christmas 2024 and she wore the ring to the Golden Globes that January.

The wedding got out by accident. Law Roach mentioned it on a red carpet in March 2026, and in June Holland settled it in an Esquire interview: asked whether he had needed to warn his family about fake images of the ceremony circulating online, he said no, because they were all there. "That's all you'll get on that," he added. No date has been given and none is likely to be.
