Biography

On a Sunday in October 2024, a few hundred young men in denim jackets and floppy fringes filled Washington Square Park for a Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest organised over the internet. Police broke the gathering up and fined the organiser, but not before Chalamet himself slipped into the crowd in a cap and face mask and then pulled the mask off in the middle of the scrum. Few scenes explain better what this New Yorker means to his generation.

He was born in New York on 27 December 1995 and grew up in Hell's Kitchen, in the middle of Manhattan. His father, Marc Chalamet, is French, from Nîmes, and worked as an editor at UNICEF. His mother, Nicole Flender, danced on Broadway before moving into real estate. His older sister, Pauline Chalamet, is also an actress. That bilingual household produced a dual national who spent his summers in France and who still gives interviews in French without missing a beat.

He studied at LaGuardia, the New York performing arts high school his mother attended and where his classmates included Ansel Elgort. His screen debut came in an episode of 'Law & Order' in 2009, though the part that got him noticed was Finn Walden, the vice president's wayward son, in the second season of 'Homeland' (2012). He was juggling television and theatre back then: in 2016 he won the Lucille Lortel Award for 'Prodigal Son', the John Patrick Shanley play he led off Broadway.

He enrolled at Columbia to study cultural anthropology, moved on to NYU's Gallatin School and then dropped out as the film work piled up. By that point he had already turned up as the teenage Tom in 'Interstellar' (2014), directed by Christopher Nolan, and he strung together small roles in 'Men, Women & Children' (2014), 'Christmas with the Coopers' (2015) and the fantasy drama 'One and Two' (2015) before his first lead, the troubled student of 'Miss Stevens' (2016).

The summer that changed everything

'Call Me By Your Name' (2017) premiered at Sundance and left the festival a phenomenon. Working with Luca Guadagnino, Chalamet played Elio, a seventeen year old discovering desire over a summer in northern Italy alongside Armie Hammer. The Academy nominated him for Best Actor at 22, making him the third youngest nominee ever in the category and the youngest in nearly eight decades. The film took the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for James Ivory, who was 89 at the time.

That same season he showed up in 'Lady Bird', the directing debut of Greta Gerwig, and in Scott Cooper's western 'Hostiles', opposite Christian Bale. Then came 'Beautiful Boy' (2018), where he played Nic Sheff, a young man lost to crystal meth, opposite the helpless father of Steve Carell. The performance brought him Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG nominations. Around the same period he shot the indie drama 'Hot Summer Nights', shot before 'Call Me By Your Name' but held back until 2018.

One of the most telling gestures of his career dates from those years. After shooting 'A Rainy Day in New York' with Woody Allen, he announced that he was donating his entire salary to Time's Up, the LGBT Center in New York and RAINN. "I am learning that a good role isn't the only criteria for accepting a job," he wrote at the time.

Paul Atreides and the box office

He moved into big scale filmmaking with 'The King' (2019), playing Henry V for David Michôd, with Robert Pattinson as a sneering Dauphin, and as Laurie in 'Little Women', Gerwig's second feature, beside Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh. He also slipped into the ensemble of 'The French Dispatch', by Wes Anderson, as a shaggy haired student revolutionary.

The role that made him a global star, though, was Paul Atreides in 'Dune' (2021), the Denis Villeneuve adaptation that put him on screen with Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin. That first instalment collected six technical Oscars and set the saga on its way. The same year he played Yule, the skateboarder who falls for Jennifer Lawrence's character, in 'Don't Look Up', the Adam McKay satire with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep.

He went back to Guadagnino for 'Bones and All' (2022), a cannibal romance with Taylor Russell on which he also took a producer credit for the first time.

Two enormous hits followed. 'Wonka' (2023), directed by Paul King and shot in Britain, had him singing and dancing next to Hugh Grant and Olivia Colman, and passed 600 million dollars. 'Dune: Part Two' (2024) went beyond 700 million and remains his highest grossing film.

Bob Dylan and that SAG speech

None of it prepared him for singing as Bob Dylan. In 'A Complete Unknown' (2024), directed by James Mangold, he performed more than forty songs live, on guitar and harmonica, after five years of preparation with voice, music and dialect coaches. The repeated delays to the shoot ended up working in his favour, and the title itself comes from a line in 'Like a Rolling Stone'. Monica Barbaro played Joan Baez and Edward Norton was Pete Seeger.

The film earned him a second Oscar nomination and made him the youngest actor to be nominated twice in that category since James Dean. In February 2025 he won the Screen Actors Guild Award, and his speech travelled around the world: he said he was "in pursuit of greatness", name checked Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando and Viola Davis alongside Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps, and signed off with "I want to be one of the greats". Some heard arrogance, others plain honesty.

Marty Supreme, nine Oscars and no statuette

Josh Safdie wrote 'Marty Supreme' with him in mind, his first narrative feature directed without his brother Benny Safdie. Chalamet is Marty Mauser, a table tennis hustler in 1950s New York loosely based on the real player Marty Reisman. He had started taking ping pong lessons back in 2018, long before any script existed, and trained for months with professional coaches. Safdie even made him wear prescription glasses over contact lenses to change the look of his eyes, blurred vision included.

He produced the film as well, sharing the screen with Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, Tyler, the Creator and Fran Drescher. Released on Christmas Day 2025, it recorded the biggest domestic opening in A24's history, finished its run at around 191 million dollars worldwide and sat at 93 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, one of the best reviewed titles of the season.

Chalamet finally won a Golden Globe in January 2026, his first after five nominations, and took the Critics Choice award too. What happened next was a lesson in awards season whiplash. The film went home empty handed from the BAFTAs despite eleven nominations, matching the record for the most losses in a single night, and repeated the trick at the Oscars on 15 March 2026, where it lost all nine of its categories. Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor for 'Sinners'.

Private life and what comes next

Chalamet keeps his personal life quiet. He dated the actress Lily-Rose Depp between 2018 and 2020, and he has been with the businesswoman and television personality Kylie Jenner since the spring of 2023. For nearly three years neither of them said much about it in public, until January 2026, when he collected his Critics Choice award and referred to her as his partner in front of the whole room.

He divides his time between New York and California, and away from filming he is a regular at Madison Square Garden cheering on the Knicks, a habit he picked up as a boy.

His diary isn't slowing down. 'Dune: Part Three' opens on 18 December 2026, the adaptation of 'Dune Messiah' that closes Villeneuve's trilogy, with Paul Atreides returning years later as emperor. It was shot between studios in Budapest and the dunes of Abu Dhabi during the second half of 2025. In April 2027 comes 'Not Alone', the Illumination animated feature in which he voices Joe, a rocket mechanic, opposite Selena Gomez.

At thirty he has three Oscar nominations and no statuette. What he said on that SAG stage, about wanting to be one of the greats, is still a promise he hasn't cashed in, and nobody knows it better than he does.
