Synopsis
The Dollangangers look like the perfect family until the father dies in a car crash. With no money and no way to support her four children, Corrine takes them back to the mansion of her wealthy parents, who disowned her years ago. Her plan is to win back the favour of her dying father, and his fortune with it. There's just one condition: he can never know the children exist.
So Chris, Cathy and the twins Cory and Carrie are hidden away in the attic, watched over by a grandmother who believes they've been evil from the moment they were conceived. While they learn to get by up there, their mother's visits become fewer and further between.
V.C. Andrews' 1979 novel was a bestseller and furtive reading for a generation of teenagers. It had already been filmed in 1987, and in 2014 Lifetime went back to it with 'Flowers in the Attic', a TV movie that sticks far more closely to the book than that first version did.
Heather Graham plays Corrine and Ellen Burstyn, an Oscar winner for 'Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore', is grandmother Olivia, a role that earned her Emmy, SAG and Critics' Choice nominations. The older siblings are played by Kiernan Shipka, Sally Draper in 'Mad Men', and Mason Dye. Deborah Chow, who went on to direct every episode of 'Obi-Wan Kenobi', made it from a script by Kayla Alpert.
It premiered on Lifetime on 18 January 2014 and drew more than six million viewers. Critics were split, with an average of 4.9 out of 10 across the 19 outlets collected on Movienco. The sequel, 'Petals on the Wind', followed that May, and Lifetime adapted the next two novels in 2015.

The only way to review 'Flowers in the Attic' is to consider how well it does what it sets out to do: that is, adapt the book faithfully and still make an entertaining film. For that, it gets a B+.

'Flowers', both the book and the new movie, is completely absurd (if you want to gauge the absurdity, just know that one of the darkest secrets in the narrative involves a doughnut) but somehow also…

While Graham pulls out every trick in the book, Burstyn achieves more with an eyebrow or pursed lips. Combined, they're a brilliant foil to the innocence of the children.
