Plot

Mary is a little girl who lives with her great-aunt Charlotte in the country, a place where nothing ever happens. One day, her curiosity gets the better of her, causing her to chase a cat into the forest and discover an old broomstick and a rare flower that only blooms every seven years in that very same forest. Taking ahold of the broomstick and the flower, Mary has no choice but to fly, floating above the clouds until she reaches Endor College, a school of magic hidden in the sky. The school is run by Madam Mumblechook and the clever Doctor Dee. While at first, everything seems perfect, Mary soon begins to wonder what really goes on at the school: she'll end up lying and having to risk her life just to get to the bottom of it all.

Trivia Mary and the Witch's Flower

The director screened the film for his former colleagues at Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki congratulated Yonebayashi, but told him not wanted to see her. Toshio Suzuki and Isao Takahata praised the film and congratulated Yonebayashi for his work. This is the first animated movie from Studio Ponoc, founded in 2015 by several ex-employees of Studio Ghibli, including Hiromasa Yonebayashi. The film was candidate for the Best Screenplay and the Best Production Design in the Annie Awards.
