Plot

American actor and director Tom McCarthy goes back to the cinema with 'Stillwater'. Academy award winning for 'Spotlight', filmmaker writes 'Stillwater' screenplay with with Marcus Hinchey, Thomas Bidegain and Noé Debré.

Presented in the Official Selection of the 74th Cannes Film Festival, 'Stillwater' shows Bill Baker's hard judicial battle. A former oil company worker, Bill lives in low-skilled jobs in the suburbs of Stillwater, Oklahoma. For the past four years, Bill has visited Marseille, France, annually, where his daughter, Allison, is incarcerated, accused of having killed his girlfriend, an arab girl called Lina.

The young woman insists on her innocence, despite having spent four years in prison and having been found guilty. On his last trip to the French city, Allison tells her father that a her friend has given her a possible clue to find real author of the crime. Bill, seeing that there is a possibility to get his daughter out of prison and prove her innocence, begins the search for Lina's real murderer. In this investigation he will be accompanied by Virginie, a theatre actress with whom he met at the hotel where he is staying and who will serve as an interpreter to find the true crime author. In this search, Bill will discover the most inhospitable side of social inequality that exists in France and that serves as a metaphor for the rest of Europe.
