Plot
Toni Servillo plays the role of Eduardo Scarpetta, an Italian actor and playwright who lived from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century and who is known for his translations into Neapolitan of a large number of French plays. In this biographical film, we learn more about the artist's life. In addition to Servillo, the cast includes Maria Nazionale as Rosa de Filippo, Cristiana dell'Anna as Luisa de Filippo, Roberto de Francesco as Salvatore di Giacomo and Antonia Truppo as Adelina de Renzis.
'The King of Laughter' was first released during the 78th Venice Film Festival, where Servillo won the Pasinetti Award for Best Actor. It also participated in the Malaga Film Festival and the Uruguay International Film Festival, among many others. It was directed by Mario Martone, who received a nomination for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1995 for 'L'amore molesto', and was also nominated for Un Certain Regard at the same event for 'Teatro di Guerra'. It was produced by Indigo Film and Tornasol Films, in collaboration with Rai Cinema, the Italian Ministry of Culture, the European Union, the Lazio Region, the Campania Region, the Spanish Film and Audiovisual Arts Institute (ICAA), and the Italian Ministry of Culture.
