Undiscovered

Brier, a Nebraska girl turned New York model, crosses paths on the subway with Luke, a singer and songwriter who's about to try his luck in Los Angeles. There's just time for him to toss her his gloves before she's gone, but neither of them forgets it. Not long after, fed up with her cheating rock star boyfriend, she heads west too, to study acting.

In class she makes friends with Clea, who leads her straight back to Luke, now a regular at a club in town. Brier has sworn off musicians, but she decides to help him anyway and cooks up a plan to fake a buzz around him so the record labels come calling. The further his career goes, though, the more it costs them both.

Irish director Meiert Avis, best known for his U2 videos, made 'Undiscovered' from a script by John Galt, and for a while it was called 'Wannabe'. Steven Strait sings Luke's songs himself and Pell James plays Brier, while Ashlee Simpson, who'd been in '7th Heaven' before her pop career took off, got her first big film role as Clea and sings 'Undiscovered', a track from her debut album. Carrie Fisher is Brier's agent, and Stephen Moyer, Shannyn Sossamon, Fisher Stevens, Peter Weller and Kip Pardue round out the cast.

Critics hated it, and its average across the 21 outlets collected on Movienco is 3.6 out of 10. The box office was even worse. It made just over $1 million in the US on a $9 million budget, and takings fell 86.4% in its second weekend, the steepest drop on record for a wide release until 'Collide' beat it in 2017.
