About the The Exorcist saga
'The Exorcist' (1973) is for many the most influential horror film ever made. William Friedkin adapted William Peter Blatty's novel about Regan (Linda Blair), a twelve-year-old girl possessed by a demon, and the two priests, Father Karras and Father Merrin (Max von Sydow), who try to save her. With Ellen Burstyn as Regan's mother, it was the first horror film nominated for the Oscar for best picture, and it won two, for adapted screenplay and sound.
Its sequel, John Boorman's 'Exorcist II: The Heretic' (1977), was a flop, and Blatty directed a third part himself in 1990. Renny Harlin's prequel 'Exorcist: The Beginning' (2004) told the young Father Merrin's story, with Stellan Skarsgård, in 1949 Africa, and is the first in story order.
David Gordon Green made 'The Exorcist: Believer' (2023), a direct sequel to the original with Ellen Burstyn back, and the series continues with 'The Exorcist: Martyrs', due in March 2027.
