Biography

She was hired for a single episode, and that character ended up changing the history of Spanish television. Few anecdotes define Carmen Machi better: an actress capable of turning any role, however small, into something unforgettable. Born in Madrid on 7 January 1963 and raised in nearby Getafe, María del Carmen Machi Arroyo descends on her father's side from a family of Genoese artists, which may explain the craft: few Spanish performers have moved so naturally between classical theatre, popular comedy, auteur cinema and mass phenomenon.

From Getafe to La Abadía

Her vocation woke early: at 17 she was already performing with a local company in Getafe, and she spent years honing her craft on stage while television knew nothing of her. The decisive leap came in 1994, when she joined Madrid's Teatro de La Abadía under José Luis Gómez, one of the most demanding acting schools in the country. She has never let go of the stage, with acclaimed productions such as 'La tortuga de Darwin', 'Platonov' and 'Falstaff', and three Max Awards, Spain's top theatre honours, to show for it.

Aída, the cleaner who made history

In 2000 she was offered a one episode part in '7 vidas': a cleaning lady called Aída García. The chemistry was so instant that the character stayed for five years, stealing scenes alongside Javier Cámara, until she made history: in 2005 came 'Aída', the first spin-off ever in Spanish television, which ran for ten seasons and more than two hundred episodes.

The series was a juggernaut, watched by millions, with the hapless Luisma of Paco León among its beloved misfits. Machi led it until January 2009, when she stepped away at the peak to return to theatre and film, coming back for a five episode arc in 2011 and the 2014 finale. The character refused to retire: in 2026 she put the overalls back on for 'Aída y vuelta', the reunion film directed by León himself.

Almodóvar's favourite scene stealer

While Aída ruled the ratings, Pedro Almodóvar made her a talisman for brief, indelible parts: the chatty nurse of 'Talk to Her' (2002), the endearing Chon of 'Broken Embraces' (2009), an appearance in 'The Skin I Live In' (2011) and a seat on the plane of 'I'm So Excited' (2013). The partnership is in rude health: in 2026 they reunite for 'Bitter Christmas', their fifth collaboration.

A Goya and a torrential filmography

Early film work included the bittersweet 'Torremolinos 73' (2003) and a full lead in 'Woman Without Piano' (2009), by Javier Rebollo. Then came the box office mother of them all: her Merche in 'Spanish Affair' (2014), with Dani Rovira, Clara Lago and Karra Elejalde, won her a Goya Award, Spain's Oscar, in the most watched Spanish film ever released in cinemas, with a further nomination as best actress for 'The Open Door' (2016).

With Álex de la Iglesia she formed another fertile partnership in 'My Great Night' (2015) and 'The Bar' (2017), and her recent run shows the same instinct: the fading writer of 'It Snows in Benidorm' (2020), directed by Isabel Coixet, and above all the mother in 'Piggy' (2022), the rural horror hit that travelled the world from Sundance. Netflix's thriller 'A Widow's Game' (2025) followed, with '53 Sundays' and 'The Righteous' on the 2026 horizon.

Celeste and a career's worth of honours

Prestige television has claimed her too: she led one of the Spanish episodes of Netflix's anthology 'Criminal' (2019), was the unsettling Montserrat Baró of 'La Mesías' (2023), the acclaimed series by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, and found another towering role in 'Celeste' (2024), created by Spanish Affair writer Diego San José, as a tax inspector obsessed with catching a pop superstar. In 2024 Spain gave her its Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts and in 2026 the National Cinematography Award, the country's highest career honour in film.
