Biography
When Jennifer Aniston finally joined Instagram in October 2019, she reached a million followers in five hours and sixteen minutes, a Guinness World Record. Few facts sum her up better: twenty five years after 'Friends' made her the most imitated woman on television, the appetite for one of Hollywood's most enduring stars hadn't faded a bit.
She was born on 11 February 1969 in Sherman Oaks, California, and raised mostly in New York. Acting ran in the family: her father, John Aniston, born in Crete, spent decades as soap villain Victor Kiriakis on 'Days of Our Lives'; her mother, Nancy Dow, was an actress and model; and her godfather was Telly Savalas, Kojak himself. Her parents divorced when she was nine, and a memoir her mother published in 1999 left the two estranged for fifteen years before they reconciled.
She trained at Manhattan's LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts, the 'Fame' school, and paid for acting classes by waiting tables and working as a bicycle messenger. Her screen beginnings were humble: a string of cancelled sitcoms and a film debut in the horror cheapie 'Leprechaun', which she cheerfully mocks to this day.
Rachel Green and the haircut that conquered the nineties
Then came September 1994. As Rachel Green, the runaway bride who stumbles into Central Perk, Aniston helped turn 'Friends' into one of the most watched and most repeated series in television history, a fixture of British schedules for three decades now. Her layered haircut became known simply as 'The Rachel' and was copied in salons everywhere.
By the final two seasons she and her castmates, including her real life best friend Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow and Matthew Perry, were earning a million dollars per episode. The role brought her the Emmy for lead comedy actress in 2002 and a Golden Globe in 2003, and she returned for the 2021 special 'Friends: The Reunion'.
Romcom queen with a serious streak
While still on the show she built a film career: 'Picture Perfect', 'The Object of My Affection' with Paul Rudd, the cult office comedy 'Office Space' and the mother's voice in the animated gem 'The Iron Giant'.
After the sitcom ended she owned the romantic comedy for a decade: 'Bruce Almighty' with Jim Carrey took nearly 485 million dollars worldwide, and 'Along Came Polly' with Ben Stiller, 'The Break-Up' with Vince Vaughn and 'Marley & Me' with Owen Wilson, a Christmas Day record breaker in 2008, kept the streak going.
She sharpened her edge as the predatory dentist of 'Horrible Bosses' with Jason Bateman and the fake suburban mum of 'We're the Millers', and later teamed up with Adam Sandler for Netflix's hugely watched 'Murder Mystery' and its sequel. When she wanted respect as a dramatic actress she earned that too, first in 'The Good Girl' opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, then in 'Cake', whose portrait of chronic pain brought her Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations.
The Apple years
In 2019 she returned to television as anchor Alex Levy in 'The Morning Show', which she stars in and produces alongside Reese Witherspoon. The part won her the Screen Actors Guild Award for best drama actress in 2020; season four arrived in September 2025 and a fifth is already shooting. Next up, she'll play Jennette McCurdy's controlling mother in Apple's series based on McCurdy's bestselling memoir 'I'm Glad My Mom Died', which she also produces. She runs the haircare brand LolaVie on the side.
A very public private life
Her love life has fed the tabloids for a quarter of a century. She married Brad Pitt in Malibu in July 2000, and their split in early 2005, with Angelina Jolie in the picture, became one of the defining celebrity sagas of its era. She later met Justin Theroux filming 'Wanderlust', married him at home in 2015 and announced an amicable separation in 2018.
In 2022 she put years of pregnancy gossip to rest, revealing in Allure that she'd gone through IVF attempts and had closed that chapter. Since 2025 she's been with Jim Curtis, a hypnotherapist and wellness author; they went public on Instagram that November and marked their first anniversary in 2026. Thirty years on from that first coffee at Central Perk, Aniston remains what she's been nearly all along: the most familiar face on the planet's most rewatched show, still headlining, still in charge.
