Mario Casas trivia
- He wanted to be a firefighter Before he discovered acting, Mario Casas dreamed of other jobs: as a child he wanted to be a firefighter or a policeman. It was advertising, which he started working in as a young boy, that eventually led him to acting.
- Commercials since childhood Mario Casas started working as a model when he was just seven, and before making the jump to fiction he appeared in commercials for brands such as Telepizza, Renfe and Cola Cao. He then trained as an actor at Cristina Rota's school in Madrid.
- His first film, with Banderas His first film role came in 'Summer Rain' (2006), the second film Antonio Banderas directed after 'Crazy in Alabama'. Almost ten years later they worked together again, this time as fellow cast members, in 'The 33' (2015), about the Chilean miners trapped in the San José mine in 2010.
- A Goya at the first attempt After more than fifteen years in the business, Mario Casas earned his first Goya nomination for 'Cross the Line', David Victori's thriller, and turned it into a win: at the 2021 ceremony he took the Goya for Best Actor, ahead of Javier Cámara, Ernesto Alterio and David Verdaguer. The same role also won him the Feroz Award.
- Almost four years waiting for 'La mula' Mario Casas shot 'La mula' in 2009, but the film wasn't released until 2013, at the Málaga Film Festival, where he won the Silver Biznaga for Best Actor. To master his character's Andalusian accent, a fan from Jaén recorded the script's lines for him so he could imitate them.
- Two Silver Biznagas Mario Casas has twice won the Silver Biznaga for Best Actor at the Málaga Film Festival: in 2013 for 'La mula' and in 2025 for 'Muy lejos', Gerard Oms's debut feature, which also brought him the Gaudí Award and another Goya nomination.
- From gaining 10 kilos to losing 12 Within a short time, Mario Casas went through two opposite transformations: he put on 10 kilos to play Martinón, a solitary mountain trapper, in 'Under the Skin of the Wolf' (2017), and right afterwards lost more than 12 to play Francesc Boix, the photographer held in the Nazi concentration camp, in 'The Photographer of Mauthausen' (2018).
- A soundtrack for every character Before every shoot, Mario Casas puts together a playlist of songs that suits the character he is about to play, and listens to it over and over throughout filming so he never steps out of the role.
- The hardest part Despite his long career, Mario Casas has admitted that memorising scripts is what he finds hardest when preparing for a film. He has also described himself as a poor student.
- Directing his brother Mario Casas made his directing debut with 'Mi soledad tiene alas' (2023), a drama set in the world of graffiti that he also wrote. For the lead role he chose his younger brother, fellow actor Óscar Casas.
- Brothers on screen too Mario and Óscar Casas aren't only brothers in real life: in the Movistar+ series 'Instinct' (2019), Óscar played the brother of Mario's character. Mario is the eldest of five siblings, and Óscar has followed in his footsteps as an actor.
- An international adventure that never reached Spain In 2013 Mario Casas shot 'Eden', a Spanish, American and Malaysian co-production directed by Shyam Madiraju about a football team fighting to survive. He shared the screen with Nate Parker and Jessica Lowndes, but the film was never released in Spanish cinemas.
- His favourites Mario Casas's favourite film is 'The Boy Who Cried Bitch' (1991), by Juan José Campanella. He is also a great admirer of Alfredo Landa's films, and when it comes to music he leans towards flamenco: his favourite song is Camarón's 'Como el agua'.
