Biography

In the summer of 2022 a Kate Bush song from 1985 climbed back to the top of the charts, number one in Britain included. The reason was a scene in 'Stranger Things' in which a character runs towards the light while 'Running Up That Hill' plays. The character was Max Mayfield and the actress carrying the whole thing was Sadie Sink.

She was born on 16 April 2002 in Brenham, a Texas town of barely fifteen thousand people. She is the fourth of five children, and in 2012 the whole family moved to New York so that she and her brother Mitchell could act. Quite a bet for a household with no connection to the business.

From Broadway to Hawkins

She was on a stage before she was on a screen. At ten she made her Broadway debut in 'Annie', first as a standby and later alternating in the title role, and in 2015 she played the young Elizabeth II in 'The Audience', the Peter Morgan play led by Helen Mirren.

Her first significant television job came in 2017, when Matt and Ross Duffer brought her into the second season of 'Stranger Things' as Max, the new girl in town with a skateboard and an unbearable stepbrother, played by Dacre Montgomery. She was told at the audition that she was too old for the part, and pushed until they gave her more to read.

Four seasons later Max had become one of the show's best loved characters, and her showdown with Vecna in the fourth run is among the most watched and most argued about things Netflix has made.

The fifth and final season came out in instalments between 26 November and 31 December 2025, with a last episode that also played in cinemas. That closed eight years in Hawkins alongside Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Winona Ryder and David Harbour.

Netflix horror and a daughter for Brendan Fraser

While the series was running she was putting together a filmography a good deal harsher than you would expect from an actress her age. She started as the protagonist's teenage sister in 'The Glass Castle' (2017) and followed it with the horror of 'Eli' (2019).

In 2021 she led two thirds of the 'Fear Street' trilogy, the Netflix experiment that released three films in three weeks: she is Ziggy Berman in 'the 1978 chapter' and turns up again in 'the one set in 1666'.

That same year she did something that widened her audience well beyond film. She starred opposite Dylan O'Brien in the short film 'All Too Well', directed by Taylor Swift to go with the extended version of her song.

The step up came with 'The Whale' (2022), where Darren Aronofsky cast her as Ellie, the furious teenage daughter of the character played by Brendan Fraser. It is an unpleasant part with almost no softening, and she holds her own against an actor who won the Oscar for that film.

Then came the thriller 'A Sacrifice' (2024) and 'O'Dessa' (2025), a post apocalyptic rock opera directed by Geremy Jasper in which she also sings.

The stage, a Tony nomination and Marvel

In 2025 she went back to Broadway with 'John Proctor Is the Villain', Kimberly Belflower's play about a group of teenagers at a rural Georgia high school studying Arthur Miller's 'The Crucible' just as an abuse scandal breaks in their own town. She played Shelby Holcomb and picked up a Tony nomination for best actress in a play, her first.

It was one of the hits of the season. She gave her final performance on 13 July 2025 and the production carried on until the end of August with another actress in the role. There will be a second life for it: Universal is preparing a film version directed by Danya Taymor, who staged the play, with Tina Fey and Marc Platt producing and Sink as an executive producer.

And then there is Marvel. 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' opens on 31 July 2026, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, with Tom Holland back under the mask and Sink in a part the studio has kept quiet about to the very end.

British audiences have a stake in this one. Shooting started in Glasgow in August 2025, with the Scottish city standing in for New York under the working title Blue Oasis, and moved to Pinewood and other English locations until December. Zendaya, Jacob Batalon and Jon Bernthal as the Punisher are in it too. The betting has long pointed to Sink playing a very familiar mutant, though nothing has been confirmed.

Away from work she guards her privacy. She has been vegan since she was fourteen, calls herself a feminist and has turned up on the young achiever lists at 'Forbes' and 'Time'. At twenty four she has a generation defining series behind her, a Tony nomination, a superhero film and a play she is about to produce herself. Not bad for someone who started out as Annie's standby, waiting in the wings eight shows a week.
