Plot
Bugonia follows two young individuals obsessed with conspiracy theories, convinced that hidden forces control the world from the shadows. Their fascination with the inexplicable leads them to a point of no return when they decide to take matters into their own hands: kidnapping a renowned executive from a powerful technology company. They are convinced that she is not human, but an alien infiltrated in society to manipulate humanity and accelerate the destruction of the planet.
After meticulously planning the kidnapping, they manage to hold her in a remote location. There begins a tense confrontation where the boundaries between reason and paranoia blur. The young men attempt to force her to communicate with her supposed home planet to stop the damage that, according to them, she has caused. However, as the confinement drags on, tensions rise and the situation begins to spiral out of their control.
Outside, the disappearance of a high-profile public figure triggers an intense media and police search. The captors find themselves cornered by their own fears, by the contradictions in their beliefs, and by the growing possibility that it all may have been a terrible mistake. Will the executive manage to escape? Or will the young men discover a more disturbing truth than their theories?

Trivia
Kidnapping scene
In Bugonia (2025)'s kidnapping scene, kidnappers wear Jennifer Aniston masks, an idea from Yorgos Lanthimos, a huge Friends fan. They obtained enthusiastic consent from Aniston, who is of half-Greek descent.
VistaVision
After successfully employing VistaVision for the reanimation sequence in Pobres criaturas (2023), director Yorgos Lanthimos decided to use this technology for the majority of scenes in this film. This is the third film of the 21st century shot substantially in VistaVision, after The Brutalist (2024) and Una batalla tras otra (2025).
Salvar el planeta tierra
Bugonia (2025) is an adaptation inspired by the 2003 South Korean film Jigureul jikyeora!. Initially, the original director, Jang Joon-hwan, was set to helm the project, working with American screenwriter Will Tracy on the screenplay. Due to health-related delays that prevented Jang Joon-hwan's continued involvement, CJ Entertainment, drawn to Yorgos Lanthimos' distinctive directorial vision, appointed him to lead the project forward instead.
